Happy New Year everyone!
How was your new year vacation? My wife and I were planning to spend it in Nagano with her family but the weather was bad so we changed our mind and spent the holiday in Fuji. We had a nice time and, on Christmas Day, we saw the new Disney Movie Big Hero 6 or Baymax. I really enjoyed it. I think it might be even better than Frozen. We went to Bishamonten Shrine to get our new year fortune. Mine was ‘大吉’ or ‘very lucky’. I’m not really superstitious so I don’t believe in fortunes but it’s still nice.
2015 is the Year of the Sheep. My hometown back in England, Malvern, has many sheep. Many live on the common land and roam freely. They often wander in the road and block traffic. When my wife visited England she took some tourist photos of sheep because they are uncommon in Japan. However, for British people like me, sheep are so common you hardly pay attention to them. The word, ‘sheep’ is used in many English phrases and idioms. A ‘black sheep’ is someone who doesn’t fit in with the rest of their group or family (because most sheep are white). ‘A wolf in sheep’s clothing’ is someone who appears harmless but is actually dangerous. Sheep can also be used to describe someone who has no ideas of their own and just follows other people. Is Prime Minister Abe a sheep, a black sheep, or even a wolf in sheep’s clothing? みなさん、新年あけましておめでとうございます。
お正月休みはいかがでしたか？私は妻の実家である長野に行く予定でしたが、天気が悪かったので予定を変更し、富士でお休みを過ごしました。すてきな時間を過ごすことができ、クリスマスには、新しいディズニー映画の「ベイマックス」を観てきました。とても面白かったです。「アナと雪の女王」よりも良かったかもしれません。初詣には、毘沙門天神社に行き、おみくじを引きました。私のは「大吉」でした。私はあまり占いは信じませんが、それでも大吉は嬉しいです。

2015年はひつじ年ですね。私の故郷であるイングランドのマルバーンにはひつじがたくさんいます。共有地にたくさんいて、自由に鳴いています。よく道路に入ってしまい、交通の妨げになってしまうこともあります。妻がイングランドに来た時は、観光の記念にと、ひつじと一緒に写真を撮っていました。日本にはない光景ですもんね。しかし私たちイギリス人にとっては、ひつじは普通に見るもので、あまり気にしません。「ひつじ」という言葉はたくさんの英語のフレーズやイディオムに使われます。「black sheep（黒い羊）」というのは、団体や家族に馴染めない人のことを指します。「A wolf in sheep’s clothing（ひつじの皮をかぶったオオカミ）」というのは害が無いように見えるけど実は危険な人のことをいいます。「sheep（ひつじ）」はまた、自分の考えを持っていなく、いつも誰かにしたがう人を指します。安倍総理は「sheep」「a black sheep」「a wolf in a sheep’s clothing」どれにあたるでしょうか。みなさん、どう思いますか
