Hello everyone,

Happy New Year! I hope you enjoyed the new year`s celebrations. I had a fantastic winter holiday. My parents came all the way from Ireland and arrived in Japan on December 29th. They got to meet their granddaughter for the first time, which was really special for them. They brought two suitcases, one for their things and one for Midoriko`s gifts. They had so many presents from friends and family that they filled an entire suitcase!　On New Year’s Eve my wife’s family treated them to a traditional Japanese dinner of sashimi, soba and mochi. It was a big family event with many relatives who came to visit. I taught my parents how to say “Oishi” when they tried the food. We rang in the New Year in true Japanese style by visiting Sengen shrine in Fujinomiya on New Year’s Day. It was my parents first time to throw money into the box and pray for a happy year. The photo shows my mother tying her fortune to a post outside the shrine. There was a freezing cold wind in Fujinomiya that day so we didn`t stay for long.
On January 3rd my wife`s family, my parents and I went to Gotemba to see the “Illumination”. It`s an attraction that has thousands of lights set up along walkways. It feels like a winter wonderland as you walk through it. I`ve put up some photos, but you have to see it for real to get the full experience. It was amazing and well recommended. We saw my parents off to the airport on Monday, and they said they had a fantastic time. 2014 was an amazing year and I`m excited to see what 2015 has in store.

みなさん、こんにちは。
新年あけましておめでとうございます！新年のお祝いはどうでしたか？私は素晴らしい冬休みを過ごすことができました。両親が、12月29日にアイルランドから日本に到着し、初めて孫娘と対面しました。本当に特別な時間となりました。スーツケースを二つ持ってきていたのですが、一つは自身の荷物のため、もう一つはみどりこへの贈り物のためのものでした。家族や友達からのプレゼントを、スーツケースいっぱいに持ってきてくれました。大晦日の日には、妻の家族が刺身やそば、もちなどの伝統的な日本のごちそうを用意して、もてなしてくれました。たくさんの親戚が集まり、大きな家族イベントとなりました。私は両親に「おいしい」の言い方を教えてあげました。元日には富士宮の浅間神社に行き、伝統的な日本のお正月を過ごしました。両親たちは、初めて賽銭箱にお金を投げ入れ、お参りをしました。写真は母がおみくじを結んでいるところです。富士宮はとっても冷たい風が吹いていました。

1月3日には妻の家族と私の家族で御殿場のイルミネーションを見に行きました。いくつものライトが歩道に点灯していました。何枚か写真を撮りましたが、実際に見に行くことが断然おすすめです。両親は月曜日に発ち、素晴らしい時間を過ごすことができたと言っていました。2014年は本当に素敵な年でした。2015年もどんな年になるのか、わくわくしています。
