Kevin vs the Leeches　ケビン対ひるの戦い

Hello everyone,

The summer holiday has started for many of our students. In England that would mean you didn’t go to school. For most Japanese children, it means you still go to school but for club activities or you go to extra cram school or extra study. We have started summer classes here too. I hope everyone also gets some free time to relax, take a trip, go swimming and so on. It’s important to balance work and play.

みなさん、こんにちは。

多くの生徒さんたちは夏休みが始まっているようです。イングランドでは、夏休みは学校には行きませんが、ほとんどの日本の生徒さんたちは、夏休みも部活動の為に学校へ行ったり、勉強のために塾へ行きます。ここHARIOでも夏期講習が始まりました。旅行へ行ったり、泳ぎに行ったり、くつろぐ時間もとってくださいね。勉強と遊びのバランスが大切ですよ。

Last weekend was a 3-day weekend here because of the Marine Day national holiday. On Monday I went for a hike up Mt Jumai (十枚山） in Nanbu just over the Yamanashi border. It was a lovely day and I enjoyed seeing many birds as well as a deer and a serrow (かもしか) along the way. Near to the top of the mountain, the path got smaller, the trees got denser and the place got very muddy and humid. It was in this part of the hike when I looked down and saw a leech (ひる、蛭） attached to my leg and sucking the blood out. I was a little shocked; I’d never seen a real life leech before over many years of hiking in Japan. I flicked it off my leg and decided to continue. However, more leeches came and were climbing up my boot aiming for my leg. I kept having to stop and brush them off. It became impossible to continue so I decided to turn back. When I got back to a bigger path without trees and leeches I took of my boots and found another leech on my ankle inside my sock. It was only when I got back to my car that I noticed the last leech attached to my neck. In spite of this, it was a fun hike. However, I couldn’t make it to the summit. I hate cicadas and now I have a new enemy. I hate leeches too. Be careful if you go to a humid forest or swimming in a lake. There might be leeches about. Leeches, you may have won this battle but I will have my revenge. Have you ever been attacked by a leech?

先週末の3連休、私は山梨県にある十枚山へハイキングに行きました。お天気も良く、たくさんの鳥や鹿、カモシカを見ることができました。頂上に近づくにつれ、道は狭く、木々が生い茂り、じめじめ蒸し暑くなりました。そんなとき、私は自分の足に蛭（ひる）がくっつき、血を吸っているのを見つけてしまいました。日本の山では蛭をみたことがなかったので、少しショックでした。私は蛭をはらって、先へ上ることにしました。しかし、さらに多くの蛭が私の足に這い上がってこようとし、これ以上先へ行くのは無理だと思い、引き返すことにしました。木や蛭のいない大きな道にでて靴を脱いでみると、靴下の中にも蛭がいるのを発見しました。車に戻ると、首にも蛭がくっついていました。頂上まで行けなかったものの、楽しいハイキングでした。私はセミが嫌いなのですが、今、蛭という新しい敵をつくってしまいました。本当に、大嫌いです。じめじめしている森に行ったり、湖で泳ぐときには蛭がいるかもしれないので十分注意してくださいね。蛭め、今回は負けたけれど次は必ず仕返ししてやる。あなたは蛭にかまれたことはありますか？
