Batten down the hatches!　嵐にそなえて！

Hello everyone,

“Batten down the hatches!” The meaning of this phrase is to prepare for a storm. It comes from an old nautical saying, when a ship was at sea and a storm was coming, they would have to seal off the top deck of the ship. Typhoon “Neoguri” is coming this Thursday night so be prepared for some high winds and lashing rain. It has already hit Okinawa and there were trees being pulled out of the ground! It`s the strongest typhoon in 50 years and has made international news around the world. Usually these typhoons die down a bit before they reach Fuji so it shouldn`t be too bad here.

Speaking of storms, Germany rained down goals on Brazil in the world cup semi-final this morning. The final score, 7-1 to Germany, left the home supporters shocked and in tears. It was a record breaking defeat for Brazil, and Germany`s Klose broke the record for most world cup goals scored by a player. Over the last four world cups he has scored a total of 16 goals. Germany look so dangerous going into the final it won`t be surprising if he adds to that tally. Whoever wins the next semi-final between Argentina and Holland must be terrified to face Germany on their current form.

“Batten down the hatches!”（直訳：船のハッチを締めて!）

これは「嵐に備えましょう」という意味のイディオムです。航海中嵐が来た時に船のデッキを封鎖しなければならなかった、古代の船乗りの言葉に由来するものです。

台風「ノグリー」が木曜日夜に上陸するので、強風・豪雨に備えて下さいすでに沖縄に上陸したようで、多くの木々が倒れてしまっているようです。50年に一度の強烈な台風で、今世界中でニュースになっています。普通はこのような台風は富士市に来る前に小さくなってしまうので、今回も大きな被害がでないとよいです。

嵐と言えば、ドイツが今朝のワールドカップ準決勝でブラジルに圧勝しました７－１でドイツが勝利し、ブラジルのサポーターたちはその衝撃に涙していました。ドイツのクローゼ選手はワールドカップ最多得点記録も更新しました過去4年間のワールドカップで彼は16得点をあげています。ドイツはとても強く、彼がまた得点を決める可能性は十分あります。アルゼンチンかオランダか、次の準決勝でどちらが勝っても、ドイツ戦は苦戦を強いられることでしょう。
