Hello everyone,

How’s it going? Are you coping in this heat and humidity? The World Cup has reached the quarter-final stage. I’m really enjoying it. It’s great to see star players like Neymar and Messi play well and to see new stars emerge, like Colombia’s James Rodiruguez. I thought his name was pronounced James,

ジェイムズ, as in James Bond. But actually it’s pronounced like Hamez, ハメズ, because Colombia is a Spanish speaking country. It’s becoming difficult to decide who to support. At first I was supporting England obviously. But they lost in the group stages. I supported Japan too but they couldn’t get out of their group either. I decided to back the USA because my older brother lives there and he has an American family. I might follow the Netherlands now because one of their starting players, defender Ron Vlaar, plays for Aston Villa, my hometown Premier League club and it would be good to have a World Cup winner on the team. The football pool competition is getting interesting. You can check out the leader board in the waiting room. I’m not doing very well. Sachiyo is just above me in the rankings. The leader is a private student who goes to boarding school in the UK. He knows a lot about football.

みなさんこんにちは

いかがお過ごしですか。暑さと湿気に負けていませんか。ワールドカップはトーナメント戦に進んでいます。私はとても楽しんでいます。

ネイマールやメッシなどの有名な選手を見るのも面白いですし、コロンビアのハメズのように新しいスターを見つけるのも面白いですね。彼の名前は、ジェームズと発音すると思っていましたが、Jamesで「ハメズ」と発音するそうです。コロンビアはスペイン語を話す国だからですね。

 

残りの国も少なくなり、どこの国を応援しようか、決めかねるところです。

私は最初はイングランド応援でしたが、彼らはグループステージで負けてしまいました。

日本もまけてしまいましたね。なので、アメリカの応援をすることにしました。兄が住んでいますし、彼の奥さんと家族はアメリカ人だからです。でもアメリカもまた、負けてしまいました。

多分、これからはオランダ応援になると思います。私のホームタウンのサッカーチーム「アストンビラ」の選手であるロンがいるからです。

待合室に飾ってある、「優勝者をあてるゲーム」も面白くなってきました。是非、飾ってある結果表をみてくださいね。私の予想は、まぁまぁです。でも、サチヨの得点の方が私よりちょっと上です。

今、一番なのは、イギリスから一時帰国している生徒さんです。彼は、サッカーの事に詳しいので、あたるわけですよね。
