Hello everyone,

How are you doing? It’s been a nice week here meeting new students taking trial lessons. It’s great to see new people with enthusiasm for learning English. Sometimes new students can be a little nervous at the start but over the course of a lesson you can see them relax, join in and have fun speaking English. They see that English isn’t that scary or difficult and anyone can learn it if they try.

みなさん、こんにちは。
ご機嫌いかがですか。今週からHARIOイングリッシュスクールでは「入会キャンペーン」が始まり、初めてお試しレッスンを受ける生徒さんがHARIOに来ています。
英語をがんばるぞ！というやる気をもった生徒さんたちに会えるのはとても嬉しいです。
ときどき、お試しレッスンに来て、少し緊張気味のお子さんもいますが、クラスをやっていくうちに、リラックスしだし、英語を話すことを楽しんでいきます。そして彼らは、英語は怖いものでもなく、難しくもないと実感します。

This week has been very cold which is appropriate as the Winter Olympics start today in Sochi, Russia. I love watching big sport events like the World Cup and the Olympic Games. In the UK we don’t get a lot of snow and there are only a few small ski resorts so we don’t usually get lots of medals in the Winter Olympics. However, this year we have a strong team and a chance to win lots of medals in events like skeleton bobsleigh, curling and slopestyle (a new event). Japan has chances to win medals in women’s ski jumping and figure skating. Ireland also has a small team going to Sochi. I’ve put a medal table up in the waiting room so we can track who has the most medals. Good luck to all the athletes!

今週は、とても寒いですね。ロシアのソチで今日から開催される冬季オリンピックには喜ばしい気候です。私はワールドカップやオリンピックなどのような大きなスポーツイベントを見るのが大好きです。イギリスではあまり雪は降らず、スキー場も小さなものが少ししかありません。
なので、イギリスは多くのメダルはいつも期待できません。
しかし、今年はとても強い選手たちがいます。ボブスレー、カーリング、スロープなど。
日本では、女性選手に期待がかかりますね。スキージャンプや、フィギュアースケート。
アランの国であるアイルランドも小さな選手団ではありますが、参加します。
毎年恒例の、メダル表を待合室に飾りました。取ったメダルの数を毎日その表にアップデートしていきたいと思います。選手のみなさん、頑張ってください。

I used to live in Nagano Prefecture, which hosted the 1998 Winter Olympics. My wife was in elementary school at that time. Her class was given free tickets to see the ski jumping in Hakuba. Japan won the gold medal and she met the mascots (called Snowlets) so it was a great memory for her. Japan built lots of things in Nagano for the Olympics like a new Shinkansen line and sports venues. I used to enjoy skiing on the Olympic runs in Nozawa Onsen and Hakuba and I’ve ice skated in the Olympic skating venues. Japan will host the Olympics again in 2020. I’m sure they’ll do a great hosting it like London did in 2012.

私は以前は長野県に住んでいました。長野では１９９８年に冬季オリンピックが開催されました。私の妻はその時、小学生でした。彼女の学校では、白馬のスキージャンプを無料券が配られたそうです。そして、その時に日本は金メダルをスキージャンプでとりました。
オリンピックのマスコット（スノーレッツ）にも会えたそうで、彼女にはいい思い出となっているそうです。日本はその長野オリンピックの為に沢山のものを建築しました。
新幹線や競技場などです。私はそれらで作られたスキー場やスケート場によく行きました。
日本は次に２０２０年に開催地となります。日本も２０１２年のロンドンオリンピックのように素晴らしい開催地となると思います。
