I hope you are all enjoying the warmer weather and getting some sun! It’s been hot, but not too hot, especially at night. So enjoy it while it lasts because the heat will get worse! The big news of the past few years in Japan has been the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. People have been excited for years about it. In 2020 it was, of course, delayed but what do people think about it now?

 

I asked friends and family both in Japan and around the world what they thought of the Olympics in this Covid-19 situation. Most enjoyed watching the Olympics, though a few of my Canadian friends prefer the Winter version (me too!). I asked them if they would watch this year’s Olympics and most said they might watch maybe a gold medal final here and there on TV. I also asked them if they would attend the Olympics if they were held in their countries, and less than half said yes. Even though most of my friends and family have gotten at least the first vaccine, they still didn’t feel comfortable attending events with large amounts of people around. They were very surprised to hear that less than 10% of the Japanese population have been given even their first vaccine. They were surprised again to hear that the events would have fans in the audience!

 

My Japanese friends and family don’t seem very interested in the Olympics apart from a few events. They said they would not attend, even if the tickets were free! Without a vaccine they think it’s very irresponsible to attend events.

暑いですが、暑すぎず、猛暑になるのを前の心地よい天候を皆さん楽しんでいますか。

今の日本で大きな話題は、東京2020オリンピックですね。

何年もの間、楽しみにしてきたオリンピックではありますが、今皆さんはオリンピックをどう思いますか。

 

コロナ禍の中でのオリンピック開催をどう思うのか、日本や世界中の友人、家族に尋ねました。

私のカナダの友人は、夏ではなく冬のオリンピックを楽しみにしているのですが、

ほとんどの友人たちの答えは、オリンピックを楽しみにいているとでしたが、決勝戦だけをテレビで観戦したいようです。

もしオリンピックが今、自国で開催されたら、観戦に行きたいかどうかという質問に、Yesと答えたのは半分以下でした。

彼らはほとんどの人がワクチン接種をしているにも関わらず、周りにたくさんの人がいるイベントに参加することに不安を感じています。

日本では10％未満しか最初のワクチン接種を終えていないと聞いて、海外の友人たちは非常に驚いていました。

 

そしてまた、私の日本の友人や家族はオリンピックやイベント参加に興味がないようです。たとえ、チケットが無料であっても。

ワクチン接種なしに、それらのイベントに参加するのは無責任だと彼らは考えています。

 

皆さんはどう思いますか。オリンピックが楽しみですか。
