How did you ring in the New Year?

Hello everyone,

Happy New Year! How did you ring in the new year? All over the world, people have different ways of celebrating. In Ireland, we usually spend the evening with family and friends. Bars are usually open, where people can countdown to midnight. This time, however, bars had to close at 8PM, due to the pandemic. There are fireworks in Dublin city too. The last time I was there for the New Year there was a huge display in the city center. That was 4 years ago, but I’ll have to wait a while before I can visit Ireland again. I spent the New Year in Fuji with my Japanese family. . My wife’s sister and cousins joined us and we ate sushi and soba for dinner, and afterwards watched Kohaku on TV until midnight. Kohaku is a big music concert that takes place every year. There were many performers who had big hits during the year and they were split into two teams, red and white. People can vote for their favorite team online. The winners this year were the red team. I can’t remember which performers were on which team. My favorite performance was by Tomoyasu Hotei, who played his famous song from Kill Bill, which is my favorite movie soundtrack. By midnight, everyone in my family was asleep! I had to wake up my wife to wish her a happy new year. I’ve been asking our students this week what they did, and most of them had a similar experience on New Years Eve. Some of them also visited shrines to pray for a good year. I hope it’s a good one for all of us.

あけましておめでとうございます。

みなさんは、どのように新年を迎えましたか。世界では、さまざまな祝い方があります。

アイルランドでは、家族や友人とすごします。バーが開いているので、そこで新年のカウントダウンを一般的です。しかし今回は、コロナのため、バーは午後8時に閉店しなければなりませんでした。花火もあります。私が最後に正月に行ったときは、市内の中心部では大きなディスプレイがありました。もう4年前のことですが、再び帰れる日までは、まだ時間がかかりそうです。今年も新年は富士で、妻の家族と一緒に迎えました。すしやそばを食べて、深夜まで紅白を見ました。紅白は、毎年日本で行われる、一大音楽番組です。今年は赤組がかちましたが、私が一番よかったのは布袋さんのパフォーマンスでした。彼は私の好きなキルビルの挿入歌を演奏しました。そして深夜には、家族全員が寝ていました。生徒達に、ニューイヤーズイブに何をしたかを聞くと、みな同じような過ごし方でした。何人かは、初詣に行ったようです。ともかく、皆様よいお年をお迎えください。
