With August just around the corner tomorrow, we are getting into the height of summer. It’s extremely hot and humid here in Fuji. My family have taken a trip to Ireland where it’s a nice, comfortable 20 degrees every day. It’s the only time of the year when Ireland has nicer weather than Japan! Ireland’s summer is so short that it will be cold again in September, so they should make the most of the nice weather while they can.

Did you check out the Fuji festival last weekend. It was supposed to start at 2:00PM, but right about that time a huge thunder storm passed right over Fuji. There was extremely heavy rain and lightning, which struck every few seconds. The lightning struck so close to our house that the flash and thunder came at the same time, and our house shook. I’m sure it was a scary experience for anyone who braved the rain and went to Chuo Park. I heard that most of the performances were cancelled, but the festival got underway again once the rain stopped at about 5:00PM. Like most people, I went out after the rain to see the fireworks, which were beautifully reflected in the river. It was a shame that the first part of the festival was a washout, but that is always a risk in the humid summer here. Obon is only a couple of weeks away, so it’s time for more Japanese summer culture, such as lighting mini fireworks in our garden and visiting relatives’ graves. What are you going to do?

明日から8月に入り、本格的な夏ですね。

富士はとても暑くて湿度も高い日が続いています。

私の家族はアイルランドへ旅行に行っていて、毎日20度ほどのとても過ごしやすい気候だそうです。

アイルランドの夏はとても短く、9月にはもう寒くなってしまうので、今のうちに良い天気を楽しんでほしいですね。

 

先週末の富士まつりはご覧になりましたか 午後2時に始まる予定でしたが、ちょうどその頃に大きな雷雨が富士の上を通過しました。 激しい雨と雷が続き、数秒おきに落雷がありました。

雷が家のすぐ近くに落ちたようで、光と音が同時に来て家が揺れました。 中央公園に向かった方は、とても怖い思いをされたのではないでしょうか。

多くの演目は中止になったようですが、雨が止んだ午後5時頃から再開されたそうです。 私も多くの人と同じように、雨が上がってから花火を見に行きました。川面に映る花火がとてもきれいでした。

前半が雨で流れてしまったのは残念でしたが、この季節の富士ではよくあることですね。

 

お盆ももうすぐですし、庭で手持ち花火をしたり、ご先祖様のお墓参りをしたりと、日本の夏らしい行事が続きます。
