English “borrows” some more Japanese words!

In the past week, the Oxford English Dictionary underwent its quarterly update to stay current with the evolving vocabulary of the English language. As a result, 23 “borrowed” Japanese words have been incorporated into the English lexicon.

先週、オックスフォード英語辞典は、進化する英語の語彙に常に対応するために四半期ごとの更新を行いました。その結果、23の「借用」日本語単語が英語の辞書に組み込まれました。

It comes as no surprise that a majority of these words are related to food or cooking, given the increasing influence and popularity of Japanese cuisine in the UK over the past few years. These newly added terms include Onigiri, Okonomiyaki, Donburi, and Katsu. I still fear Katsu, often misunderstood solely as a type of Japanese curry, remains a point of confusion for many in the wider British public.

ここ数年で、英国における日本料理の影響力と人気が高まっていることを考えると、これらの単語の大部分が食べ物や料理に関連していることは驚くべきことではありません。新しく追加された用語には、おにぎり、お好み焼き、丼物、カツなどが含まれます。カツは、単に日本のカレーの一種として誤解されることが多く、英国国民の多くにとって依然として混乱の原因となっているのではないかと私は懸念しています。

However, these Japanese borrowings are not novel occurrences. The first Japanese word documented in the English Dictionary dates back to 1577 with the inclusion of “Kuge.” Since then, the list of borrowed, loaned, or added Japanese words has expanded considerably, now numbering over 500.

しかし、このような日本からの借用は新しい事ではありません。英語辞典に初めて記載された日本語の単語は1577年に遡り、「公家」が含まれていました。それ以来、借用、貸与、または追加された日本語のリストは大幅に拡大し、現在では500を超えています。

In addition to food-related terms, the recent update also introduced non-food-related Japanese words such as Isekai, Kintsugi, Tokusatsu, and Washi tape.

最近のアップデートでは、食べ物関連の用語に加えて、異世界、金継ぎ、特撮、和紙テープなど、食べ物に関係ない日本語の単語も導入されました。
