Congratulations to Japan for securing their place in the last 16 of the World Cup last night! I must admit I didn’t stay up or wake up early to watch the game, I didn’t even stay up for England’s last group game versus Wales, in the so-called “Battle of Britain” when we won 3-0.

I had thought before the game Japan might have been able to manage a draw with Spain, but still, with a likely victory for Germany against Costa Rica it might have all been in vain. But waking this morning to hear of Japan not only progressing out of the group stage but also to have won their group, was fantastic news! Thinking back before the competition had started, being placed in the same group as Spain and Germany would seem a big challenge for any team!

One statistic I thought was interesting via the BBC, since 1966 when detailed records of matches at the World cup began. Only two times has a team lost a game despite attempting 700+ passes in a game, they were Spain vs Japan last night and Germany vs Japan last week. So while the losing team manages to have far more procession of the ball, Japan still manages to win the match.

But unless both England and Japan make it to the final there is no chance of them meeting at this World Cup, as next England plays against Senegal on Sunday and then Japan is against Croatia on Monday!

ワールドカップのベスト16の進出を決めた日本の皆さん、おめでとうございます

わたしは正直ゲームを見るために起きていることも、早く起きることもできませんでした…

「英国の戦い」で、母国イングランド対ウェールズ戦で、イングランドが3-0で勝ったときですら私は起きていられませんでした

わたしは試合前、もしかすると日本はスペインと引き分けに持ち込めるかもしれないと思いました、それでもドイツがコスタリカに勝ったら、すべてが台無しになってましたね。

今朝起きて、日本がグループリーグを突破しただけでなく、グループリーグを勝ち抜いたというニュースを聞いて、すごいチームだ思いました。　このワールドカップが始まる前、スペインやドイツと同じグループに入ることは、誰もが嫌がっていたと思います！

ワールドカップの試合の記録を取り始めた1966年以降、BBCの統計で面白いと思ったものがあります。1試合で700本以上のパスを通したにもかかわらず敗れたのは、昨夜のスペイン対日本、先週のドイツ対日本の2回だけだそうです。つまり、負けたチームがより多くのボールを持っていても、日本は試合に勝つことができたのです。
