It’s December at last, and 2024 is coming to a close. At this time of the year, people always say things like, “I can’t believe it’s almost Christmas already!” and “The year has flown by!” Do you feel this way? This time of the year is also the busiest time for shopping. In Ireland, the shopping malls are absolutely jammed with people doing their Christmas shopping. Everyone needs presents to give to their loved ones. They also need all of the essentials for a Christmas dinner, which consists of turkey, ham, stuffing, cranberry sauce, potatoes, carrots, mince pies, and Christmas pudding. Don’t be confused by the name of Christmas pudding, because it isn’t anything like pudding in Japan. It’s a dark cake made up mostly of dried fruit such as raisins. We pour brandy on it and set it on fire before serving. I’m not a fan of raisins so I usually pass on that. If you want some more confusing “puddings”, a very popular item in an Irish breakfast is also called pudding. It has two variations, black and white pudding. Again, it’s not a dessert, this pudding is meat, white pudding is a bit like sausage, but chopped and fried, and black pudding is similar, but has blood in it which gives it a black color. They go with sausages, bacon, eggs, beans and toast to make an Irish breakfast. So, there are several “puddings” in Ireland, which are all totally different! It took me a long time to realise mince pies don’t have any minced meat in them. I didn’t eat one for many years because I didn’t like the idea of minced meat in a pie! They actually have fruit and spices inside. Enjoy any Christmas preparations you have this month, don’t forget to put up your tree!

ついに12月になり、2024年も終わりに近づいてきました。この時期になると、よく「もうすぐクリスマスなんて信じられない」や「一年があっという間に過ぎたね」と言いますが、皆さんもそう感じますか？この時期はショッピングも一番忙しい時期です。アイルランドでは、ショッピングモールがクリスマスの買い物をする人々でいっぱいになります。みんな、大切な人へのプレゼントやクリスマスディナーの準備をしています。クリスマスディナーには、七面鳥、ハム、スタッフィング、クランベリーソース、ポテト、ニンジン、ミンスパイ、クリスマスプディングなどが並びます。

ところで、クリスマスプディングという名前に驚かないでくださいね。日本のプディングとは全く違うんです。これは主にレーズンなどの乾燥果物で作られた濃い色のケーキで、サーブする前にブランデーをかけて火をつけます。私はレーズンがあまり好きではないので、普段は食べませんが。

また、混乱しそうな「プディング」もあります。アイルランドの朝食で人気のある「プディング」は、デザートではなく肉なんです。白プディングはソーセージに似ていて、細かく切って揚げたものです。黒プディングは血が入っているため黒い色をしていて、こちらもソーセージに似ています。これらはソーセージ、ベーコン、卵、ビーンズ、トーストと一緒にアイルランドの朝食として楽しむことができます。アイルランドには名前が同じでも全く異なる「プディング」がいくつかあるので、ちょっとややこしいですよね。

ちなみに、ミンスパイにはひき肉は入っていないんです。最初はひき肉が入っていると思って食べなかったのですが、実際には果物とスパイスが入っています。
