Hello everyone,

It’s boiling, roasting, sweltering, scorching, baking, blistering hot today! These are all good ways to say it’s really hot. It’s 33 degrees as I write this and the sun is beating down. It looks like we’ll have the same weather tomorrow, too. I guess it’s going to be extremely hot and humid until September now. My students said they heard the cicadas chirping, but I haven’t heard any yet. Are they quieter than usual in my neighborhood? Now that summer has kicked in, we have air conditioning to keep us cool inside. It makes me wonder what people did before air-conditioners were invented?

Spain won the world cup on Monday, and from what I heard they were the deserved winners after extra-time. I didn’t watch it live because it was so early. Please set the matches at a reasonable time in the next world cup!

Fuji festival takes place this Sunday. I hope it cools down a bit for the day because it’s heavy humidity out there. I’d like to have a look around at the festival without suffering too much from the heat. Every year, there is a street parade just outside Chuo Park on Aoba-dori. They play the same two songs over and over again, Fuji Samba and one other, which everyone dances to. I think it’s cool that Fuji has its own song, however, it has quite a South American beat to it. The festival will finish with fireworks which will have a record 6,060 fireworks to celebrate Fuji’s 60th municipal anniversary. Enjoy the summer festival!

今日は、ものすごく暑いです！

「焼けるように」「焦げるように」「蒸し暑い」「灼熱」「オーブンみたい」「皮膚が焼けるように」など、どれも「とても暑い」という意味の表現です。今これを書いている時点で気温は33度で、太陽が強く照りつけています。明日も同じような天気になりそうです。どうやら9月までは、非常に暑くて湿度の高い日が続きそうですね。生徒たちはセミの声を聞いたと言っていましたが、私はまだ聞いていません。私の住んでいる地域では、いつもより静かなのでしょうか。夏になり、室内ではエアコンが涼しくしてくれています。エアコンが発明される前、人々はどうやって暑さをしのいでいたのか気になりますね

月曜日にはスペインがワールドカップで優勝しました。

延長戦の末、勝つべくして勝った試合だったと聞いています。試合開始がとても早かったので、私はライブでは見ませんでした。

次のワールドカップでは、もう少し常識的な時間に試合を設定してほしいですね。

今週の日曜日には富士まつりが開催されます。湿度がとても高いので、少しでも涼しくなるといいのですが。あまり暑さに苦しまずに、祭りを見て回りたいと思っています。毎年、中央公園の外側、青葉通りでストリートパレードが行われます。同じ2曲、富士サンバともう1曲を繰り返し演奏し、みんなが踊ります。富士市に専用の曲があるのは素敵ですが、かなり南米風のリズムなんですよね。

今年の花火大会は、富士市の市制60周年を記念して、過去最多の6,060発が打ち上げられるそうです。
