April Fools’ Day!

Next Monday is the 1st of April and April Fools’ Day, a day of pranks and practical jokes. On this day, we play harmless pranks on our friends, which are normally revealed with the prankster calling out “April Fools!”. These days, pranks are often made through mass media as well, so you can never trust what is said or announced on the day and only revealed to have been a prank the following day!

There are many theories as to the origins of the day. One popular theory traces back to the 16th Century in France when King Charles IX adopted the Gregorian calendar, which moved New Year’s Day from April 1st to January 1st. Those who continued to celebrate the New Year in April were considered foolish and were the subject of ridicule and practical jokes.

One prank from 1957 was when the BBC featured a news story from Italy showing how they grew spaghetti on trees. Many Britons were taken in by this as they had seen it on TV, a relatively new medium at the time. The BBC had to feature another news story the following day apologizing after they were besieged by phone calls asking where they could purchase the pasta trees.
