Recently, I’ve been hearing rumbling in the sky every now and then. Thunder storms are common in Japan in late summer and autumn. They are more intense here than back in Ireland. In Ireland, during rare thunder storms, lightning strikes and then we hear the thunder, with a little rumble after. In Japan, however, when lightning strikes the rumble of thunder afterwards can last for a few seconds. Also, the lightning is more violent and frequent during storms here. A storm passed through Fuji last week, and I heard the flashes of light and the noise of thunder getting closer together with each strike. Then, the light and sound both hit at the same time, right above us. The whole house shook from the strike, so it was a scary experience. I think it hit one of the high metal electricity pylons near our house. This year, while we have had a few thunderstorms, we haven’t had many typhoons reach Fuji, touch wood. What does that mean, “touch wood”? This is a phrase we use to avoid bad luck, usually when you mention good luck that you have had in the past. So, if I say we haven’t had many typhoons in Fuji yet this year, I could be “tempting fate” by saying it, and a typhoon might come along soon. So, I touch some wood (e.g. a wooden table), and say it. This superstition stops any of that from happening. So, if you talk about some luck you have been having recently, don’t forget to touch wood to keep things going well!

最近、時々空で雷の音が聞こえることがあります。日本では、夏の終わりから秋にかけて雷雨がよくありますが、アイルランドよりもこちらの方が激しいです。アイルランドでは、稀に雷雨があると、まず稲妻が光り、その後に雷鳴が聞こえ、少しゴロゴロと音が続きます。しかし、日本では稲妻が光った後、雷鳴が数秒間続くことがあります。また、こちらの雷雨では稲妻がより激しく、頻繁に発生します。先週、富士市を嵐が通過し、稲妻の光と雷鳴が一撃ごとに近づいてくるのを聞きました。そして、光と音が同時に私たちの真上で発生しました。家全体がその一撃で揺れたので、とても怖い経験でした。おそらく、家の近くにある高い金属製の電柱に雷が落ちたのだと思います。今年は雷雨が数回ありましたが、幸いなことに富士市に台風があまり来ていません。「touch wood」とはどういう意味でしょうか？これは、過去にあった幸運を話すときに悪運を避けるために使うフレーズです。例えば、今年はまだ富士市に台風があまり来ていないと言うと、それが「運を試す」ことになり、台風がすぐに来るかもしれません。だから、木（例えば木製のテーブル）に触れてから言います。この迷信は、そういったことが起こらないようにするためのものです。最近の幸運について話すときは、物事がうまくいくように木に触れるのを忘れないでください
