The upcoming Eiken tests

Hello everyone,

It`s been warming up a little in the last few days since the freezing cold previous week. I wonder when spring will arrive? Will it come earlier than usual this year? As the end of January approaches, so does the Eiken test. This Saturday, our students will take the test that they have been working hard at for many months. It`s a gradual slope of improvement to be able to take the next step up the ladder of the Eiken grades. There is a big level change between the Eiken grades, so it can take years of study to reach the next step. That`s why the test can be a nerve-wracking experience. They have worked hard for this moment, it`s time to show how much your English has improved. When they pass the written test, they can take the speaking test a few weeks after. That`s another nervous time for students. Going into a room and speaking with a stranger in a foreign language sounds like a daunting prospect for anyone. I remember when I was a student in Ireland, we had to take two speaking tests as part of university entrance exams. I took tests in Irish and French. The speaking test itself wasn`t so nerve-wracking, it was the waiting that was worse. Waiting your turn, watching the other students enter and leave, until you are next! That`s what made me shake with fear. My advice to students who feel nervous before any exam is to realise that everyone is. This is perfectly normal, so try to relax. Nothing can change the result of the test because all of the studying is behind you. You can only do your best from now. Good luck to all of our students who are taking the test this weekend! 先週の厳しい寒さに比べて、ここ数日は少し暖かく感じられます。春の訪れはいつになるのでしょうか今年は少し早く来るかもしれませんね

1月の終わりが近づくと同時に、英検の試験日もやってきます。今週の土曜日、生徒たちは、何ヶ月もかけて準備してきた試験に挑みます。英検の級を上がっていくのは、ゆるやかな坂道を登るようなものです。級が上がるごとに難易度が大きく変わるため、次のステップに進むまでに何年もかかることがあります。だからこそ、試験はとても緊張するものです。でも、生徒たちはこの日のために努力してきました。今こそ、どれだけ英語力が伸びたかを発揮する時です。

筆記試験に合格すると、数週間後には二次試験のスピーキングがあります。これもまた、多くの生徒にとって緊張の瞬間です。知らない人と、外国語で会話をするために部屋へ入っていく――これは誰にとっても勇気のいることです。

私がアイルランドの学生だった頃、大学入試の一環として、アイルランド語とフランス語の2つのスピーキングテストを受けなければなりませんでした。実際のスピーキング自体はそれほど怖くありませんでしたが、問題は“待ち時間”でした。他の受験者が部屋に入っては出ていくのを見ながら、自分の番が近づいてくる――その瞬間こそが、恐怖で震えるほど緊張したのを覚えています。
