We had a great time last weekend at Hario Camp 2016! Our students are all talking about how much fun they had. This year the camp was held in Yamanomura, north of Fuji City. It’s a very scenic spot, and Mount Fuji looks very beautiful up close. This campsite covers quite a large area, so there was lots of walking and exploring for our students to do.
We packed many fun activities in to the day, including a camp exploration game. Teams of students hiked around the site and had a list of things to find. None of the teams checked “bear” on their list, but I think they were relieved not to see one! I’m not sure if bears are common at the camp site, but we were given some bells to keep them away, so they must have been around.
Our students helped with camping duties such as cooking, cleaning and making a camp fire. I’m really proud of them for all the help. They really did their best and learned a lot about teamwork. We barbecued yakisoba and vegetables for dinner. It was delicious, and after all of the day’s exercise, everyone ate a lot.
We sang songs and roasted marshmallows on the campfire. We also tried to make popcorn in the campfire. It didn’t work, but it was our first attempt, so maybe next time we’ll get it right. The lodge we stayed in was quite comfortable and I was so tired I slept like a baby all night. We got up bright and early on Sunday morning at 5:30 a.m. to take a morning hike and get breakfast ready. We also met some famous characters from children’s stories in our final game of the camp.
Big thanks to all of our students who came to the camp. They all worked together and helped us to have an amazing time. See you at next year’s camp!
