Hello everyone,

Did you see any of the Fuji Festival last weekend? I didn’t attend unfortunately, during the height of Summer I should hide indoors away from the heat. I heard good things about it this year and I was told the fireworks were spectacular. Hopefully I can make it next year.

In under 2 weeks time I’ll be off to Ireland! I’m excited to visit my home country, it’s been more than a year and a half since my last visit. I can’t wait to see all of my friends and family again, especially my baby nephew. He was born earlier this month so I’ll get to meet him for the first time. His name is Domhnaill, which is an Irish name. In the Irish language it’s pronounced “Do-nal”. There are many popular traditional Irish names that are difficult for non-Irish people to pronounce. Such as “Niamh” (pronounced “Neev”), “Aoife” (pronounced “Eefa”) and Saoirse (pronounced “Sersha”). I can’t speak Irish very well, but it’s compulsory to study it at school. In some areas of western Ireland people speak Irish in daily conversation. But in all of the major towns and cities we speak English. If you go to Ireland you will notice that all public signs (road signs, safety signs etc.) are in English and Irish. You can see in the photo the Irish is top and English is bottom. I’ll have a week to spend back home and then I’ll be back to Japan after obon week.

みなさんは先週末に行われた富士祭りは行かれましたか？私は暑さに参り、部屋の中にいるしかなかったので残念ながら参加できませんでした。しかし、今年の花火も凄かったと聞きました来年は参加したいと思います

さてあと2週間足らずで、私はアイルランドに行く予定です。母国に帰れるという事でとてもワクワクしています実に1年半ぶりです。友人や家族に会うのが楽しみで仕方ありません。特に今月初めに生まれた甥っ子に初めて会う事ができるのがとても楽しみです彼の名前はDomhnaillというアイルランドの名前です。アイルランドの言葉では、ドーナルと発音します。アイルランドの人でないと発音するのが難しいアイルランド独特の名前というのがたくさんあります。たとえば”Niamh”と書いて”ニーヴ”と発音したり、”Aoife”と書いて”イーファ”と発音したり、”Saoirse”は”サーシャ”と読みます。私はアイルランド語はあまり上手くありませんが学校では必修科目となっています。アイルランドの西側の地域ではまだ日々の会話でアイルランド語が使われていますしかし大きな町では私達は英語を使います。アイルランドを訪れると公共の看板は英語とアイルランド語で書かれているのがわかると思います。上の写真を見てもらえればわかると思いますが、上がアイルランド語で下が英語です。
