Hydrangeas　あじさい

Hello everyone,

How are you doing? I saw some students at the Yoshiwara Gion Festival last weekend. Did you have a nice time? Also last weekend, my wife and I saw some hydrangeas at Iwamotoyama Park. Hydrangeas are a symbol of the rainy season in Japan. The word hydrangea comes from Greek. ‘Hydra’ or ‘hydro’ mean water and ‘angea’ or ‘angio’ means vessel. Some common words with ‘hydro’ are hydrogen, hydrate/dehydrate and ‘hydroelectric power’ (like from a dam). ‘Aqua’ is another prefix that means water. Words using ‘angio’ are rarer and usually refer to blood vessels. Angina is a common heart condition. Learning about word origins and prefixes can help you remember vocabulary and guess the meaning of new vocabulary. I find it helpful when I learn Japanese too.

これもまた先週末の事ですが、岩本山公園にてあじさいを見つけましたあじさいは日本の雨期を象徴する花ですね英語の名前はHydrageaですがこれはギリシャ語から来ています。”Hydra”もしくは”Hydro”は水を意味し、”angea”もしくは”angio”は導管を表します。”Hydro”がつく有名な単語といえば、hydrogen(水素）、hydrate(潤いをあたえる)/dehydrate(乾燥させる)、hydroelectric power(水力発電)などです。他に”水”を表すもので”aqua”というものもあります。”angio”という接尾辞はほとんど使われることがなく、普通は血管を表すのに使われます。”Angina”という単語は狭心症を意味します。
