Parent’s day 　授業参観

Hello everyone,

How are you? The Star Festival is coming soon and we have a bamboo tree in the waiting area. Students are writing wishes on it, as is tradition. England is already out of the World Cup so I can’t wish for England to win the competition. Our students have wished for many interesting things. One of them wants to meet a dragon! What will you wish for?

みなさん、こんにちは。

もうすぐ七夕ですね。ＨＡＲＩＯには笹の木があり、生徒たちがそれに願い事を書いています。イングランドはすでにワールドカップで敗退してしまったので、イングランドが勝ち残りますようにという願い事はできません。生徒たちはとても興味深いお願い事をしています。一人はドラゴンに会いたいそうです。あなたなら何をおねがいしますか

We’ve started our parent’s day classes this week. I’m always glad to welcome parents into the class and to hear their feedback. I think the parent’s day tradition is a good thing. It’s something that Japan does but the UK doesn’t. It’s good for parents to see how the children are doing in class. Of course students (and teachers) get nervous and it changes the class. Often teachers rehearse the same class many times in the weeks before to combat this. They do activities and cover English that the students are already very familiar with so nearly all the questions are answered perfectly and everything is smooth. I think this happens a lot in parent’s classes. I decided I didn’t want to do that this year. In my classes I review old English and introducing new English. I spend more time on the students’ weak points than the things they already strong at. This is what real teaching is and this is what I’d do if there weren’t anyone watching. Whenever you learn something new, at first you make mistakes and struggle but with time and practice you get better and learn how to do it. Once you’ve done that, you move on and learn another new thing. Learning is messy and mistakes are an important and vital part of any class. Making a mistake and then learning to do it correctly is education. I hope the parents who watch my class understand this.

今週から授業参観が始まりました。わたしはいつも保護者の方々を迎えるのを、また、感想を聞くのを楽しみにしています。授業参観の伝統は良いものだと思います。日本にはありますが、イギリスにはないものです。保護者の方々にとっても、授業中にお子様がどんなことをしているのかを見るのは良い機会だと思います。もちろん、生徒たち（と先生たち）は緊張するので、クラスが少し変わります。

よく、先生たちは授業参観のために何回も練習をします。生徒たちがすでによく知っている英語のアクティビティをやり、ほぼ完ぺきに答えられる質問をすれば、授業はスムーズに進みます。授業参観でよくみられることです。私は今年はそのようなことはしたくないと思いました。私のクラスでは、すでに習った英語の復習と新しい英語の導入をします。生徒たちの弱い分野には、得意な分野に比べて時間を要します。これが本当の教育で、誰も見ていなくてもやるであろうことです。何か新しいことを学ぶときにはいつでも、最初は間違いをし、苦労します。しかし、時間をかけ、練習することでやり方がわかり、よりできるようになります。一度できてしまえば、次の新しいことを学ぶことができます。学ぶことは複雑で、間違えることが重要でありどんな授業においても不可欠です。間違え、それを正しく直すことが教育です。私の授業を見学される保護者の方々が、このことを理解して下さると嬉しいです。
