Hello everyone,

How have you been? It’s been a busy week here with parent’s day coming up, new students, the World Cup, preparing our student’s speech homework and lots more. I’ll be teaching high school maths to a private student for the next couple of months. It’s been a while since I’ve done maths and I’ve been revising ahead of it. It’s a bit hard right now but with some practice it’ll come back to me, I’m sure. It’s just like a riding a bicycle. Every day is different which is what makes this job enjoyable.

In the middle of this, last weekend Sachiyo and I went to Matsusaka City in Mie Prefecture for the annual PLS sister school conference. Matsusaka is a lovely small city and we were lucky to enjoy some famous Matsusaka beef while we were there. Staff members from around 30 schools from across Japan attended. It was a very good event and I learned a lot there and took away many good ideas. The PLS system, which we teach to our elementary school students, is undergoing a major revision. It’s a great system for teaching English and has proved to be both popular and effective. However, like anything, it’s not perfect and attempts have been made to improve things about it. There’s going to be a new rank system to be fully introduced in time for the next school year. We’ll make a more detailed announcement to parents in due course. Also, many new materials and teaching ideas were demonstrated. Amongst them was a set of online games to compliment existing listening homework. We hope to pilot it with some students soon. The highlight of the conference was the chance to see two demonstration classes. In a small school like ours, you don’t have many opportunities to observe other teachers and other classes. I learned many things from watching the classes and will try some new things in my own lessons.

いかがお過ごしですか。ここ、HARIO では、新しい生徒を迎えたり、授業参観やスピーチホームワークの準備をしたり、またワールドカップもあり、忙しい一週間です。私は今月から２，３か月間、プライベートクラスで高校生に数学を教えることになりました。数学は久しぶりなので、事前に復習をしています。数学は今となっては少し難しいですが、練習を通して感覚が戻りつつあります。それは自転車に乗るような感じです。毎日が違っており、そのおかげで仕事が楽しくなります。

先週末、さちよと私は三重県にある松阪市へ、年に一度のPLS姉妹校の研修会に参加してきました。松阪市は小さくて素敵な町で、幸運なことに有名な松阪牛も食べることができました。

全国からおよそ３０校のスタッフたちが集まりました。多くを学べ、たくさんの良いアイデアを持ち帰ることができた、とてもよい研究会でした。「PLSシステム」は私たちが小学生を対象に教えているものですが、これが改定されようとしています。PLSシステムは英語教育のための素晴らしいシステムで、とても効率的で人気があるということが証明されています。しかしながら、何にでも共通するように、完ぺきではなく、システムをより改善させようと多くの試みがなされてきました。来年度より、新しい級システムが導入される予定です。詳細はおってご連絡させていただきます。
