Hello everyone,

I hope you’re having a good week. This week we’ve been joined by a new member of staff. Welcome, Yui! I look forward to working with you. I like the poster you made about preventing the spread of viruses (Take a look at the previous post.).

Japan has been in the news internationally because of the dolpin drive hunt that has taken place in Taiji, Wakayama this week. It has a become well-known issue internationally because of a documentary film called The Cove that was released a few years ago. It’s an issue that raises strong emotions on both sides of the debate. The US and UK ambassadors　to Japan have raised concerns to the Japanese government this week People on Twitter and in the media have been very vocal in condemning the practice.

The drive hunting in Taiji ivolves using boats to make waves to direct pods of dolphins into a cove and trapping them there using nets. There, fishermen choose the best looking dolphins to sell to aquariums and kill the rest for meat.

最近、日本のニュースが国際的に流れています。それは今週、和歌山県の太地で行われる「イルカ漁」についてのニュースです。この問題は、数年前に作られたザ・コーブというイルカ漁を批判するドキュメンタリー映画により、国際的に有名になりました。この問題では両者の強い意見が対立しています。

アメリカとイギリスの大使館は、日本政府にこの問題について抗議をし、またニュースやツイッターでも非難の声が集まっています。太地のイルカ漁では、「追い込み漁」といい、船を使って波を立たせ、彼らを入江に追い込んで網で漁をします。漁師は、その網の中にひっかかった一番よい見かけのイルカを水族館に売り、残りは食用にします。

 

Opponents of this practice say that this method of killing dolphins is cruel and causes lots of stress for the animals. They are trapped in a small cove without food for several days. There are famous images of the sea turning red from the blood. Others say that dolphins shouldn’t be eaten and deserve special protection because they are highly intelligent animals. There have been occasions when dolphins have saved the lives of drowning humans in the sea. This is unique among animals. Others argue that keeping dolphins in small tanks in captivity is cruel. Another argument is that dolphin meat is unhealthy due to high mercury levels.

 

反対者の意見は、この漁の仕方が、とても残酷であるといいます。イルカは小さな湾の中で罠にかかり、数日間その中で食べ物を与えられません。この漁により、海が赤色に染まる映像は有名です。

他にも、イルカは食べるべきではないという意見があります。イルカはとても頭のいい動物なので、特別な保護をすべきであるとも。またイルカを小さな水槽で飼う事は残酷であるとか、イルカの肉は水銀などの有害な物質を含んでおり健康的でないという意見もあります。

 

On the other side, supporters say that this is a local tradition and doesn’t break any laws and they say that opponents don’t understand or respect the local culture. They draw moral equivalence of killing dolphins with killing other animals for meat like cows or pigs. Some people have complained about the aggressive tactics of the animal rights campaigners, saying they harass the fisherman.

 

一方で、賛成する人々は、これは昔からある伝統であり、どんな法も侵していない。反対者は伝統的文化を理解していないし、尊重していないといいます。

牛や豚などを食用することと同じではないかと。環境保護団体の標的となり、最近は、実力行使による違法行為が繰り返されています。

 

In my adult classes this week, students have raised this issue in conversation and wanted to talk about it. Some of them defend the drive hunting and some of them are opponents. My position is that I’ve never eaten dolphin meat but I eat meat. I don’t oppose eating dolphins but seeing the scenes from Taiji I worry about the suffering of the dophins. I think if we eat meat we have a duty to make sure those animals live and die humanely. I think the language differences haven’t helped and clearly there is poor communication between both sides. I’m not an expert on the issue but that’s what I think. Have you heard about this? Do you have an opinion?

今週の「大人のクラス」の授業の中で、この話題がでて、生徒さん達でディスカッションしました。

ある生徒さんは、漁師の立場を理解し、ある生徒さんは、反対意見を示しました。

私の意見は、私はイルカを食べたことがありませんが、牛肉は食べます。イルカを食べることに反対はしませんが、あのイルカ漁の映像をみると、食べる気にはなれません。

我々が牛肉を食べるのならば、それらの動物が人道的に生活をし、食用となったことを確かめる義務があります。言語の違いがあるので、両方の意見が完全に解決されるのは難しいと思います。私はこれらの問題の専門家ではありませんが、私はそう思います。

皆さんはこのニュースを聞いたことがありますか。この問題をどう思いますか。
