Hello everyone,

Did you eat any chocolate last Saturday? It was Valentine`s day, so I have seen chocolate for sale all over shops and supermarkets for the last few weeks. In the past, I noticed that girls give chocolate to boys on this day. That is the traditional custom in Japan on Valentine`s. However, recently, I`ve noticed that girls give chocolate to everyone and anyone, regardless of gender. They often make some chocolate or sweets at home and give it to their friends. This is called “tomo-choco”. If everyone can get chocolate on Valentine`s Day, maybe we don`t need White Day anymore. What do you think? White Day hasn`t reached other countries yet. In Ireland, we are already too busy eating chocolate eggs in spring because of Easter. Leading up to Easter, we also have Pancake Tuesday in Ireland. It falls on February 17th this year, and it`s a day we all eat pancakes as a Christian tradition. I always remember the funny commercial on TV at this time of year. The commercial was for Jif lemon juice, which we pour over pancakes. It shows a woman happily pouring Jif lemon, and then her face turns to sadness. It shows the plate with only lemon juice on it, and the voice over says,”Don`t forget the pancakes of Jif Lemon Day.” Pancakes or chocolate, enjoy the snacks everyone!

先週の土曜日、チョコレートを食べましたか

バレンタインデーだったので、ここ数週間、いろいろなお店やスーパーでチョコレートがたくさん売られているのを見かけました。女の子が男の子にチョコレートをあげる日で、これが日本の伝統的なバレンタインの習慣だとは知っていました。

しかし最近では、女の子が性別に関係なく、友達みんなにチョコレートをあげているのをよく見かけます。家でチョコレートやお菓子を作って、友達に配ることも多いようです。これは「友チョコ」と呼ばれています。もしバレンタインデーにみんながチョコをもらえるなら、ホワイトデーはもう必要ないのかもしれません。どう思いますか
