It`s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

Hello everyone,

There are only a few short weeks to go until it`s Christmas, quickly followed by the New Year! Christmas is by far the bigger of the two celebrations back in Europe, whereas New Year is the big one here in Japan. At the moment, shops all over Ireland are packed full of shoppers trying to finish their Christmas shopping. This consists of presents, party supplies, and the big Christmas dinner. The Christmas dinner varies around the world, but where I come from it consists of turkey, ham, roast potatoes, carrots, broccoli, brussel`s sprouts, cranberry sauce, Christmas pudding, and more. Something my family always eat for starters is smoked salmon with soda bread. I`m not sure how common this is in Ireland, but it`s always been a family tradition for us. Be aware! Christmas pudding isn`t the soft, sweet dessert you expect when you think of pudding. It`s a dark kind of fruitcake that is covered in brandy and set on fire. It has quite a bitter taste, so I didn`t like it when I was younger. Pudding has a few variations in Ireland, white pudding and black pudding aren`t even desserts, they`re meat! So, be careful about what you are getting when you order a pudding in Europe.

Hario`s Christmas party kicks-off this Sunday, December 14th and I`m really excited about it. It`s going to be an amazing party, filled with fun games, a craft, and rumours abound that Santa might make a special appearance. See you there!

クリスマスまであとほんの数週間、そしてすぐにお正月ですね

ヨーロッパではクリスマスが一番大きな行事ですが、日本ではお正月が大きなイベントになります。

今、アイルランドの街中のお店はクリスマスの買い物をする人々でいっぱいです。プレゼントやパーティー用品、そしてクリスマスディナーの準備で賑わっています。クリスマスディナーの内容は国によって異なりますが、私の故郷では七面鳥、ハム、ローストポテト、ニンジン、ブロッコリー、芽キャベツ、クランベリーソース、クリスマスプディングなどが並びます。私の家族の伝統として、前菜にはスモークサーモンとソーダブレッドを食べるのが習慣です。アイルランド全体で一般的かどうかは分かりませんが、我が家ではずっと続いている伝統です

一つ注意してくださいクリスマスプディングは「プディング」と聞いて想像するような柔らかくて甘いデザートではありません。ブランデーをかけて火をつける、濃厚なフルーツケーキのようなもので、少し苦味があり、子どもの頃はあまり好きではありませんでした。アイルランドには他にも「ホワイトプディング」や「ブラックプディング」がありますが、これらはデザートではなく肉料理です。ヨーロッパでプディングを注文するときは、何が出てくるか注意してくださいね。
