How loud are cicadas?

It’s August already! This morning, I heard the sound that reminds me the most of this month, cicadas. Just find some trees and you’ll likely hear them chirping away. They are so loud that it can disturb us from watching TV if there are any in our garden. Their calls can reach 90-100 decibels, which is comparable to the sound of a lawnmower or a motorcycle. Some species can even reach 120 decibels, which is loud enough to be painful to the human ear. In Ireland, we can hear crickets chirping in the evening, but insects are otherwise quiet in the summer. Japan has many more species of insects than Ireland. For example, Ireland has no cicadas, cockroaches or giant hornets, known as tsuzumebashi. Ireland has plenty of bees, wasps and spiders, but they are all smaller due to Ireland’s colder climate. I got a big fright the first time I saw a huntsman spider in Japan. Their legs are so long and they can run at incredible speed, they give me the heebie-jeebies! That means they make me feel anxious and scared. Luckily, they aren’t too common and we only come across them about once a year. Another creature that I’ve seen in summer here are snakes. They are common in the UK and all throughout mainland Europe, except for Ireland. The story is that Saint Patrick drove them out of the country, but I think they just didn’t like the cold weather. I’ve seen a few here in Japan, but they seem to be scared of people and slither away when we get close. I don’t want to get close anyway in case they are venomous. There is a lot more cool wildlife to see here and the summer is the best time to find it.

もう8月ですね

今朝、私が8月を最も思い出させる音を聞きました。それは蝉の鳴き声です。

近くの木を探せば、きっとその鳴き声を聞くことができるでしょう。

庭に蝉がいると、テレビを見るのが難しくなるほどの大音量です。蝉の鳴き声は90～100デシベルに達することがあり、これは芝刈り機やオートバイの音と同じくらいの音量です。一部の種類は120デシベルにも達することがあり、これは人間の耳に痛みを感じるほどの大きさです

アイルランドでは、夕方にコオロギの鳴き声を聞くことはできますが、それ以外は夏の虫たちは静かです。

日本にはアイルランドよりも多くの昆虫の種類がいます。例えば、アイルランドには蝉、ゴキブリ、そして「ツズメバチ」として知られる巨大スズメバチはいません。アイルランドにはたくさんのハチ、スズメバチ、クモがいますが、寒い気候のために全てが日本より小さいです。

初めて日本でアシダカグモを見たときは、とても驚きました。彼らの足は非常に長く、信じられないほどの速さで走ることができます。その姿を見るとぞっとします！つまり、彼らを見ると不安で怖くなるのです。幸いにも、彼らはそれほど頻繁には見られず、年に1回ほどしか遭遇しません。

もうひとつ、夏にここで見かける生き物は蛇です。イギリスやヨーロッパ大陸全体では蛇は一般的ですが、アイルランドには蛇がいません。伝説では、聖パトリックが国から蛇を追い出したと言われていますが、寒い気候が苦手だっただけかもしれません。日本では何匹かの蛇を見たことがありますが、彼らは人を怖がり、近づくとすぐに滑り去ってしまいます。毒を持っている可能性があるため、近づかないようにしています。

ここ日本にはもっと素晴らしい野生動物がたくさんいます。そして、夏はそれらを見つけるのに良い季節ですね。
