Do you do “Hanami”?

Hello everyone,

It’s April, and the cherry blossoms are out in full bloom all over the place. I went to Shaboten in Izu on Sunday and there is a street there called Izukogen with cherry blossoms on both sides of the road. It was a beautiful drive along the street with blossoms on all sides and reaching above us across the road. This Sunday, our local park will host the annual Sakura Festival in Atsuhara. It’s our neighbourhood’s big “hanami” event of the year. There is a sea of blue blankets across the park for people to sit on and enjoy a picnic under the pink trees. There is also a stage at the event for music and dance performances. For me, hanami means that winter is officially over, and we are now looking forward to the warm weather of spring. I hope it warms up a bit before Sunday. It was unusually cold on Monday and Tuesday, not ideal for a picnic!

This is the last few days of spring vacation for our students. It won’t be long until it’s time to go back to school, or begin at a new school. Ireland, and many other countries begin their new school year in September, after the summer vacation. When asked for their opinions, Japanese people say that they prefer to begin the new school year in spring. This is because spring symbolizes new beginnings, so it feels natural to start their next step at school. What do you think? Enjoy the rest of the vacation, and don’t forget to finish your homework!

4月になり、至る所で桜が満開ですね。日曜日に伊豆のシャボテン公園へ行き、伊豆高原という通りを通りました。この道の両側に桜が咲いており、頭上まで届く桜のアーチをくぐる素晴らしいドライブでした。今週の日曜日には、私たちの地元の公園で、毎年恒例の「桜祭り」が開催されます。これは、私たちの地域の一年で最大の花見イベントです。公園中にはブルーシートが広がり、人々がピクニックを楽しめるようになっています。また、音楽やダンスのパフォーマンスが行われるステージもあります。私にとって、花見は冬が公式に終わり、暖かな春の訪れを迎えることを意味します。日曜日までに少し暖かくなることを願っています。月曜日と火曜日は異常に寒く、ピクニックにはあまり適した天気ではありませんでした！

生徒たちにとっては、春休みの最後の数日ですね。間もなく、新学期の始まり、または新しい学校での生活が始まります。アイルランドや他の多くの国では、夏休み後の9月に新学期が始まりますが、日本人に意見を尋ねると、新学期を春に始める方が良いという人が多いです。春は新しい始まりを象徴しているため、学校での次のステップを春に始めることが自然に感じられるそうです。皆さんはどう思いますか
