Are you having a “hanami”?

Hello everyone,

It’s that time of the year! The cherry blossoms are in full bloom, so everyone is going out to see them. This annual tradition, “hanami”, which translates as “see flowers”, dates back hundreds of years. It involves sitting under the cherry blossom trees and having a picnic, usually on a blue tarp. I went to Atsuhara sports park on Sunday, where they held a sakura festival. This festival had been cancelled for the last 4 years due to covid. People had been waiting for it to return, and the weather was perfect, so the park was absolutely packed with people. I had been to this festival in previous years, but this year had about twice as many people. There was a stage where musicians and dancers performed. We saw a local junior high school orchestra where I spotted some of our students. It was warm and sunny, so this was the first time of the year that I needed to cool down with a drink of lemon cider. We also got some hot-dogs to eat under the trees. They were in full bloom so the timing was perfect. It was nice t get out and see them because usually the blossom doesn’t last very long, especially with the rain we had this morning. I wonder how much will be left this weekend?

I see cherry blossom themed products everywhere now. In supermarkets, many food items have a special cherry blossom theme to go with the season. Everything is pink! Even though the cherry blossom only lasts for a few weeks, everyone is happy to see the change of the seasons. Enjoy the spring!

今年もまた、桜が満開の季節がやってきましたそこで、多くの人々が桜を鑑賞しに出かけます。

数百年の歴史を持つ「花見」という毎年恒例の伝統は、「花を見る」という意味を持ちます。通常、桜の木の下でブルーシートの上に座り、ピクニックを楽しむことが含まれています。日曜日には厚原運動公園で桜祭りが開催されました。このフェスティバルは、新型コロナウイルスの影響で過去4年間中止されていましたが、待ち望んでいた人々で、そして晴天に恵まれたため、公園は人で溢れかえっていました。私も昨年このお祭りに参加しましたが、今年はその時の約2倍の人出でした。ステージではミュージシャンやダンサーがパフォーマンスを披露していました。私たちは地元の中学校のオーケストラの演奏を鑑賞し、そこで何人かのHARIO生と出会いました。暖かく晴れた日だったので、レモンサイダーを飲んで涼むのは今年初めてのことでした。また、木の下でホットドッグを食べるのも良い経験でした。桜がちょうど満開だったので、タイミングも完璧でした通常、桜の花は長くは持たないので、特に今朝降った雨の後に外に出て花を見ることができたのはラッキーでした。
