Are there any winter sports in Ireland?

Hello everyone,

Did you see the snow here last Sunday? It was only the second time I have seen snow fall in Fuji since I came to Japan. It was a freezing cold weekend so it wasn`t so surprising, but it`s a lways a special sight to see. The north coast of Japan usually has snow thorughout the winter, but it`s rare here on the south coast. We are lucky to have mild winters here in Fuji. It was the same for me back in Ireland, where Dublin usually had slightly warmer and drier weather than the rest of the country. Winter is much wetter in Ireland, and recently there were floods in the west of the country.

The Winter Olympics has kicked off in Italy, so I checked out the Irish Olympic team. There are only four athletes from Ireland. One of them is from Norway and another is from the USA, but they have Irish grandparents, so qualify for the Irish team. Another athlete is surprisingly from the same neighborhood as me. There are no winter sports facilities anywhere in my city or the rest of the country, so I`m not sure how he became a skier! Ireland`s highest mountain is about 1,000 meters high, and the moutains there aren`t steep enough to do any skiing. There is an ice-skating rink in my home city, but nobody takes it seriously. Ireland has never won a medal at the winter Olympics, but there is a first time for everything, so we will wait and see. Good luck to them. Enjoy all the chocolate on Saturday for Valentine`s Day!

先週の日曜日、雪を見ましたか

日本に来てから富士で雪が降るのを見たのは、これでまだ二度目です。

とても寒い週末だったので驚きはしませんでしたが、やはり雪が降る光景は特別ですね。

日本の北側の地域では冬の間ずっと雪がありますが、太平洋側のこのあたりでは珍しいことです。

富士は冬が比較的温暖なので、私たちは恵まれています。

アイルランドにいた頃も同じで、ダブリンは国内の他の地域より少し暖かく乾燥した気候でした。

アイルランドの冬は雨が多く、最近は西部で洪水も起きています。

さて、イタリアで冬季オリンピックが始まったので、アイルランド代表チームをチェックしてみました。

アイルランドからの選手はたった4人です。

そのうち1人はノルウェー出身、もう1人はアメリカ出身ですが、どちらもアイルランド人の祖父母がいるため代表資格があります。そしてもう1人は、なんと私と同じ地域の出身でした。私の街にも国全体にも冬のスポーツ施設はまったくないので、どうやってスキーヤーになったのか不思議です。アイルランドで一番高い山は標高約1,000メートルで、スキーができるほど急ではありません。私の地元にはアイススケートリンクがありますが、真剣に取り組む人はほとんどいません。

アイルランドは冬季オリンピックでまだ一度もメダルを獲得したことがありませんが、何事にも初めてはあります。
