If you’ve been in our reception recently you might have noticed something new. We have an “English phrase of the week” on our whiteboard! It is updated every week with popular English phrases. We want to encourage our students to understand the meaning of phrases that don’t translate literally into Japanese. The English language has so many of these that it’s extremely difficult to learn them all. They are important to know, not just to understand native speakers, but because many of them appear in exams such as Eiken and TOEIC. There are also phrases and idioms that are only popular in each particular English speaking country. Every country has their own dialect with phrases that only the locals can understand. I have met Americans who are confused by Irish phrases such as “what’s the story?”(How are you?), and “deadly craic!”(Great fun!).
I enjoy hearing new slang terms whenever I travel. I have heard that Japan has different dialects all over the country. The Osaka and Okinawa dialects and phrases would make it difficult for me to understand the native speakers. Shizuoka prefecture has a nice, neutral dialect with not too many local phrases, although I have found myself saying “ra?” instead of “ne?” a few times at the end of a sentence!

生徒の皆さんに、日本語に直訳できないこれらのフレーズの意味を知ってもらいたいと思います。英語にはこのように直訳できないものが数多く存在し、すべてを知るのはとても難しい事です。ネイティブスピーカーが何と言っているのか理解する為だけではなく、こういったフレーズは知っておくべきなのです
なぜならこれらは英検やTOEICでたくさん出てくるからです。また英語圏だけでしか使われているようなフレーズやイディオムもたくさんあります。またどの国においても、その地域の人だけが理解できる方言があります。以前、アメリカ出身の方々にお会いしたとき、私の出身のアイルランドのフレーズ “what’s the story?”(How are you?と同じ意味）や”deadly craic”(とっても楽しかった）が混乱してわからないという事がありました
日本でも地域により違った方言があるというのを聞いた事があります。沖縄や大阪の方言は私にとってかなり理解するのが難しいでしょう。静岡の方言はあまり複雑ではなくていいですね。時々、私自信、文の最後の”だね？”を”だら？”と言っている時があったりします
