What are your New Year Traditions?

Hello everyone,

Happy New Year! We`re back in to a brand new year now, and it`s going to be a great year here at Hario. Just like last year, there will be plenty of fun and memorable classes, events, and good times to enjoy! I hope you are all well-rested after the winter vacation. Like about 90% of the people in Japan, I spent New Years Eve eating soba and watching Kohaku on TV. It seems to be a tradition for most families here. Kohaku is a big live music event that features all of the most popular songs and singers of the year. During the rest of the year, I don`t take much notice of popular music here. In fact, most of the knowledge I have of J-pop or K-pop comes from my students. Throughout the year, I always chat with students about their favorite music. I hear all about these groups, so once I watch Kohaku, I can finally see these singers that I`ve been hearing about. For example, Mrs Green Apple were hugely popular with our students this year. Watching them on Kohaku gave me the chance to see what all the hype was about. I could finally put faces to the names. My favorite song of the evening was Hoshino Gen`s performance from the Nintendo museum in Kyoto. I was a big fan of Nintendo when I was growing up, and it was nice to see some retro games in the background. I should visit that museum someday!

In Ireland, there were fireworks displays all over the country in the evening. My Irish family braved the cold weather to watch a nice show by the sea, which you can see in the photo. What new year traditions does your family have? Have a happy and prosperous 2026!

あけましておめでとうございます！新しい一年が始まり、Harioでもまた素晴らしい一年になりそうです。

昨年と同じように、楽しくて思い出に残る授業やイベント、そしてたくさんの良い時間が待っています。冬休みでしっかり休めたことと思います。

日本の約9割の人と同じように、私も大晦日はそばを食べながらテレビで紅白歌合戦を観て過ごしました。多くの家庭にとって、すっかり定番の年越しスタイルのようですね。紅白は、その年に人気だった曲や歌手が勢ぞろいする大きな音楽番組です。

普段の私は、日本の流行音楽をあまり追っていません。実は、J-POPやK-POPの知識のほとんどは生徒のみなさんから教えてもらったものです。一年を通して、生徒たちと好きな音楽の話をよくします。いろいろなグループの話を聞いているので、紅白を観ると「これがあの話していた歌手か」とようやく顔と名前が一致します。

たとえば、今年は Mrs. GREEN APPLE が生徒たちの間で大人気でした。紅白で彼らのパフォーマンスを観て、みんなが盛り上がっていた理由がよく分かりました。その夜、私が一番気に入ったのは、星野源さんが京都の任天堂ミュージアムから披露したステージでした。子どもの頃、私は任天堂が大好きだったので、背景に映るレトロゲームの数々がとても懐かしく感じられました。いつかあのミュージアムにも行ってみたいです
