Hello everyone,

Saint Patrick`s week took place here last week and everyone had a fantastic time! Our students came in wearing green and we had fun activities and games based on St. Patrick`s Day. We taught our students all about the special day, such as who St. Patrick was. He was from the UK, the part now known as Wales, over 1,500 years ago. He is the person who brought Christianity to Ireland. I learned from my students that he was similar to Frances Xavier, who brought Christianity to Japan. Our students also learned why they were wearing green, because it`s the lucky color of the holiday, and it`s customary to pinch someone who isn`t wearing green on Paddy`s Day. The short term for St. Patrick`s Day is “Paddy`s Day” because it`s the nickname for people named Patrick. I`ve noticed some Americans use the term “Patty`s Day”, but this is wrong and should be corrected if you ever see it. Just kidding! Did you know that despite being an Irish holiday, the first Patrick`s Day parade was actually held in New York, USA? There are so many people with Irish heritage there, it became a popular celebration in the US. Ex-pats living abroad like me enjoy celebrating our heritage when we can. That`s why I`m happy to look around me at the sea of green clovers that our students colored for us last week. They are hanging up in the classroom and remind me of home. 先週こちらではセント・パトリックス・ウィークが行われ、みんなとても楽しい時間を過ごしました。

生徒たちは緑色の服を着て登校し、セント・パトリックス・デーにちなんだアクティビティやゲームを楽しみました。

生徒たちは、この特別な日について、例えば聖パトリックがどんな人物だったのかを教えました。

聖パトリックは今のウェールズにあたるイギリス出身で、1500年以上前の人です。

彼はキリスト教をアイルランドに伝えた人物として知られています。

生徒から、彼は日本にキリスト教を伝えたフランシスコ・ザビエルに似ていると教えてもらいました。

また、生徒たちはなぜ緑色を身につけるのかも学びました。

緑はこの祝日のラッキーカラーで、パディーズ・デーに緑を着ていない人をつねるという習慣があるからです。

セント・パトリックス・デーの略称が「Paddy’s Day（パディーズ・デー）」なのは、Patrick（パトリック）の愛称が Paddy だからです。アメリカ人の中には “Patty’s Day” と言う人もいるようですが、これは間違いなので見かけたら直してあげてくださいね。冗談です！

ところで、アイルランドの祝日であるにもかかわらず、最初のセント・パトリックス・デーのパレードは実はアメリカのニューヨークで行われたことをご存じでしたかアイルランド系の人が非常に多く、アメリカでも人気の祝日になったのです。私のように海外に住むアイルランド人は、こうした機会に自分たちのルーツを祝うのを楽しんでいます。
