Scottish Independence　スコットランドの独立

Hello,

How are you today? We celebrated Yui’s birthday earlier. Happy Birthday Yui! Enjoy your special day.

Later this month is an important day for the UK. Scotland will hold a referendum on September 18th on whether to become a separate country and leave the UK. I’m from the UK. In fact my family is descended from England, Scotland and Ireland. My name Glennie is Scottish and it comes from glen, which means valley in Scotland. If I were Japanese, I might be called Tani-san, 谷さん.

Right now the opinion polls are split nearly 50-50 and no-one knows who will win the vote. People are arguing over who will control the oil in the sea off Scotland and whether they can still use the pound as currency as a separate country. I don’t really mind either way. I’m sure if Scotland becomes independent everyone will still get on well and we’ll be able to sort out these problems.

My wife wants Scotland to vote ‘No’ and stay part of the UK. The reason is that she loves the Union Jack, the flag of the UK. The blue and white cross in that flag comes from the Scottish flag originally so if Scotland leaves the UK we might have to redesign the UK flag.

This is one of the possible new flag designs. It doesn’t have the same impact, does it?

Who knows what the result of the vote will be? We’ll have to wait a couple of weeks. I’ll let you know.

今月はイギリスにとってとても重要な月ですスコットランドが9月18日に、イギリスからの独立の是非に関する国民投票を行います。

私はイギリス出身です。家族はイングランドとスコットランド、アイルランドの出身です。私の苗字のグレニーはスコットランドで谷を意味する「グレン」からきています。日本語だったら、「谷さん」ですね

今現在、意見はだいたい五分五分に分れていますどんな結果になるかまったく分りません。

人々は、誰がスコットランドの海域の石油を管理するのかということと、彼らがまだ独立国としてポンド通貨を使用できるのかということについて議論しています。私はどちらでもかまいません。

もしスコットランドが独立しても、上手くやっていけるでしょうし、これらの問題を解決することができると思います

私の妻は、スコットランドが「ＮＯ」を表明してイギリスの一部でいて欲しいと思っていますその理由は、彼女がイギリスの旗である「Union Jack(英国国旗)」が大好きだからです旗の中で青地に白のラインが交差しているのは、もともとはスコットランドの国の旗から引用されたものなので、もしスコットランドが独立したら、イギリスの旗を作り直さなければならないかもしれません…
