Hello everyone,

How are things with you? It’s the middle of summer so that means it’s blockbuster movie season. The Japanese box office has been dominated by Disney movies so far this year. First, Frozen was number 1 in Japan for 3 months. Only after it came out on DVD did it lose the number 1 slot, but to another Disney movie, Malificent. However, last week the new Godzilla movie was number 1. Godzilla is probably the most famous Japanese movie icon. I love big science fiction movies so I’m going to see it tomorrow. It’s got great reviews so I can’t wait. One of my adult students saw it last week and recommended it to me. This version is an American, Hollywood version of Godzilla and has a British director. However the first few scenes are set in Japan in a nuclear power plant near Mt Fuji. In preparation I borrowed the original 1954 Godzilla from the library. By today’s standards, the special effects were pretty poor; a man in a big lizard suit and scale models of Tokyo. However, the story, the suspense, the music and the iconography held up really well. I can see why it’s become a classic and spawned 30 sequals.

みなさんこんにちは。

調子はいかがですか。夏も半ばに入り、超大作映画が公開される時期となりました。今までのところ、今年の日本の映画館はディズニー映画に占拠されているようです。

まず、アナと雪の女王が３か月間連続で１位となり、DVDの発売となったとたんに順位さがりはじめました。

そしてまた違うディズニームービーが・・・。「マリフィシエント」です。

しかし、先週はこの映画を「ゴジラ」が抜き１位となりました。

 

たぶん「ゴジラ」が一番有名な日本映画ではないかと思います。私は、サイエンスフィクションが大好きなので、明日見に行こうかと思います。周りからの評判もいいので、楽しみです。

私の大人クラスの生徒さんが、「ゴジラ」を先週みたそうです。彼も薦めていました。

今回のゴジラはハリウッドバージョンの「ゴジラ」で、監督はイギリス人です。でも、最初の方のシーンは、日本でとられました。明日の準備に、図書館から１９５４年のオリジナルのゴジラ映画を借りみました。

今の技術と比べると、かなりちゃっちぃ感じをうけました。トカゲのでかい着ぐるみをきたおじさんと、ちゃっちぃ東京の街並み・・・・。しかし、ストーリーや音楽や撮り方などはいいですね。

なぜゴジラが３０シリーズも続いた傑作になったのか解るきがしました。
