How are you today? The parks look beautiful at the moment with the cherry blossom in full bloom. Many students are starting new school years and new schools in the next few days. Good luck to everyone and please enjoy your opening ceremonies.

 

The Rotary Club in Fuji and Fuji International Lounge for Sharing (FILS) organises a speech contest for foreign residents of Fuji City every year. This year I thought I would enter and a couple of months ago I wrote a speech in Japanese. Sachiyo corrected my grammar and style and I sent it off. I hadn’t heard back so I thought my speech wasn’t selected but yesterday I got a phone call yesterday saying my speech was chosen and I was invited to take part at the end of the month (Sunday 27th April). I’m looking forward to it and enjoying the challenge. I have to improve my pronunciation. At the moment my intonation goes up and down too much because that’s how English speakers speak. I need to flatten my intonation to sound more Japanese.

We have a speech contest every year here at Hario English School so I’m used to helping the students learn their speeches and critiquing them. However the boot is on the other foot now (to use an English idiom) and I’m the one being judged. It’ll be interesting to see how it feels. I don’t mind if I win or lose. I’m just happy to have a goal to help me focus on learning Japanese. It’ll be a good experience in any case.

みなさん、こんにちは。

ご機嫌いかがですか。きれいな桜の花で公園が華やかです

生徒さんの多くは、新学年がスタートするころですね。そして入学式ももうすぐです。

入学式に参加されるみなさん、緊張しないで、入学式を楽しんでね。

ところで、富士国際交流協会が、毎年、在住外国人を対象として日本語スピーチコンテストというのを開催しています。私は今年は出場してみようと思い、数か月前に原稿を日本語でかき、さちよに添削してもらいました。そのスピーチを送ってから、何も連絡がなかったので、選ばれなかったのだろうと思っていたところ、昨日「選ばれた」という電話がかかってきました。

スピーチコンテストは４月２７日（日）とのことです。参加するのが楽しみです。

コンテストに備えて、日本語の発音も練習しなければいけません。私の日本語の発音は、英語のネイティブスピーカーによくありますが、トーンのアップダウンが大きすぎます。

より日本語に聞こえるように、イントネーションを変える必要があります。

 

我々、HARIOイングリッシュスクール にも毎年、スピーチコンテストがあります。

私は生徒達にそのスピーチの発音を正す助けもしながら、彼らに厳しくもしてきました。

今度は逆の立場になります。私が審査されるのです。どんな気持ちがするか楽しみです。

私はコンテストで勝とうが負けようが気にはしません。自分の日本語上達の助けになればそれでいいのです。そして私にとってよい経験となるでしょう。
