Where do you go on a hot day?

Hello everyone,

The summer vacation is almost over! Most of our students are back to school this week or next week. Many of our older students have been studying hard throughout the vacation because they have a big test as soon as they start back. It can be stressful time, especially for high school students. It takes a lot of self-discipline to make yourself study during a holiday. There are so many distractions at home, so many students go to the library to study in peace and quiet. Here at Hario, today is the final day of our summer grammar lessons. I think our students have learned a lot this vacation, and can go back to school with confidence in their English.

The weather has been a mixed bag all over Japan this past week. There were two typhoons across the west of Japan, and after they passed it became extremely hot and humid. Last Sunday I went to Harada Park with my daughter. I noticed that it was almost empty and there was nobody else in the playground. When we got out of the car I realised why. It was too hot to be outside! I stayed in the shade while my daughter played, but couldn’t stand more than an hour in the heat, so we went home soon after. There is a saying, “Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun.” It means that English people are likely to be outside on very hot days abroad, instead of staying indoors. Irish people have similar habits when they go abroad to hotter countries. We are used to such a cool climate that it would be a shame to stay inside on a sunny day. Spain, for example, is so hot in summer that local people take a “siesta” or short nap inside at around midday. You’ll find Irish people getting sun on the beach at this time. I’m still getting used to the fact that I should stay indoors at the height of summer here. I’ll learn my lesson eventually! Thankfully, it will start to get cooler in a few weeks. Once we reach the end of September the seasons will quickly change into autumn. Enjoy the rest of the summer.

みなさんこんにちは。

夏休みはほとんど終わりですね！ほとんどの生徒の皆さんは今週から学校が始まりますね。

中、高生の多くは夏休み中一生懸命勉強していました。なぜなら学校が始まるとすぐに大きなテストがあるからです

高校生にとっては夏休みはストレスのたまる時間でもあったかもしれません。休みの間自分で自分に勉強するように非常に自制しなければなりません。家には多くの誘惑があり、生徒の多くは平和に静かに勉強するために図書館へ行きます

ここHARIOでは今日は夏期講習の最終日でした。生徒たちはこの夏休みにたくさん学んだと思いますそして英語に自信を持って学校へと戻ることができます。

天気はこの１週間日本全域で様々でした西日本では二つの台風があり、それが過ぎると極端に蒸し暑くなりました。

先週の日曜日わたしは原田公園に娘と行きました。しかし、誰も遊び場にいませんでした。

車からでるときになぜだかわかりました。外にいるには暑すぎたからです

娘が遊んでいる間わたしは日陰にいました。しかし暑さに１時間もがまんできず、すぐに家に帰りました。

「狂犬病の犬とイギリス人は真昼の太陽の中外出する」という言い回しがあります。意味はイギリス人は海外でとても暑い日に屋内にいるよりも外出しがちであるという意味です。アイルランド人は海外のより暑い国へ行くとき、似たような習慣があります。アイルランド人は晴れの日に屋内にいるのがもったいないくらい涼しい気候に慣れています。例えばスペインは夏はとても暑いので地元の人は室内で「シエスタ」もしくは短い昼寝を正午近くにとりますこの時期アイルランド人がビーチで日光浴をしているのを見掛けます。
