What’s Gaelic Football?

Hello everyone,

It’s back to school time for everyone this past week. Last week our special morning classes ended here at Hario as our students returned to their usual school life after spring vacation. Many of our students are starting at new elementary, junior high school, or high school. They were nervous and excited about starting last week. I’ve been speaking to some of them about their entrance ceremonies. Usually their school principals and teachers give speeches at this ceremony. If the speeches are too long the students can find it boring! Hopefully they can get into their new schedule easily after the holiday. They will be deciding what club to join soon. Many of them haven’t decided yet. Clubs weren’t a big thing at my junior-high/high school. In Ireland it’s called “secondary school” and lasts for six years from age 12-18, so we don’t change schools. My school had a soccer and gaelic football team, and that was all! If you didn’t want to be in a club, you didn’t have to. In fact, it was difficult to get on the team. I wanted to play for the soccer team, but I wasn’t good enough. I was a short boy back then. So all I could do was play soccer with my friends at lunch time. We played every day, so I had fun back then. My school had a strong gaelic football team. What’s that? It’s Ireland’s national sport that is only played in our country. It looks a bit like a cross between soccer and rugby. Players can pick up the ball with their hands and kick it either over the bar (like rugby) for one point, or in the goal (like soccer) for three points. It’s quite like Australia’s national sport, Aussie rules football. The two sports are so similar that every year Ireland plays against Australia in a “compromise rules” game that combines the rules of both sports. The scoring is a bit more complicated as you can see in the picture. The top players from both countries are chosen for the teams. Since they started in 1984 Ireland has won 21 games and Australia 19, so it’s close so far! Whatever sport you’re into, enjoy it in the spring weather.

みなさんこんにちは。

この一週間はみんなにとっては学校がまたはじまる頃ですね。

皆さんが春休みを終えて普段の学校生活に戻ると同時に、先週ハリオでは昼間の特別授業が終わりました

多くのハリオの生徒さんは新しい小学校や、中学校、高校が始まっていますね。

何人かの生徒さんとは入学式について話したりしています。

普通校長先生やほかの先生方が入学式でスピーチをします。

スピーチが長すぎると、生徒たちはつまらなく思ってしまいます！

休暇のあとで彼らが楽に新しいスケジュールになれることを願います。

もうすぐ生徒達はどのクラブに入るか決めます多くの子はまだ決めていません。

私の中学校や高校ではクラブは大したことではありませんでした。

アイルランドでは「セカンダリースクール」と呼ばれていて、12歳から18歳までの6年間行います。その為学校は変わりません。

私の学校はサッカーとゲーリック(ゲール人の)フットボールがあり、楽しかったです！

もしクラブに入りたくなければ、入る必要はありませんでした。実際チームに入るのは困難でした

私はサッカーチームに入りたかったのですがあまり上手ではありませんでした。その頃は背の低い少年でした

なのでお昼の時間に友達とサッカーをして遊ぶことしかできませんでした。

毎日サッカーをして楽しかったです。

私の学校には強いゲーリックフットボールチームがありました。

ゲーリックフットボールとはなんでしょう

アイルランドの国技でアイルランドでしか行われていません。

サッカーとラグビーを少し掛け合わせたようなものです

選手はボールを持ち上げる事ができます。そしてラグビーのように蹴ってバーを越えても１ポイント、サッカーのようにゴールに入れても３ポイントです。

とてもオーストラリアの国技と似ています。オーストラリアのルールのフットボールです。

二つのスポーツはとても似ているので、毎年アイルランドは両方のルールを合わせた「コンプロマイズ　ルール〔折衷ルール〕」にのっとてオーストラリアと対戦します。得点付は写真で見るよりもちょっと複雑です。両国のトッププレイヤーが各チームに選ばれます。１９８４年に始めて以来アイルランドは２１勝、オーストラリアは１９勝で、今のところかなり接戦ですどんなスポーツをしているにしても、この春の日にぜひ楽しんでくださいね。
