So this week it’s Valentine’s Day. In the UK Valentine’s Day is the most romantic day of the year. In the UK people celebrate Valentine’s Day in a number of different ways.

みなさん、こんにちは。ショーンです。

今週はバレンタインデーですね。イギリスでは一年で一番ロマンティックな日です。イギリスではこの日を色んな方法で祝います。

First of all cards. Sending a Valentine’s card to someone you like or love is a custom which has been around for over a century. It is normal for couples to send cards to eachother. But it is also traditional to send an anonymous card to someone that you secretly love. This is very common in schools and can be very amusing and embarrassing, as everyone tries to figure out who sent a card and who has a secret admirer. Also a lot of Valentine’s cards contain poems. The most famous of all the poems is: Roses are red, violets are blue, Honey is sweet and so are you. Some people also like to write funny poems such as: Roses are red, violets are blue, you look like a monkey and you smell like one too! Nowadays people tend to send Valentine’s Day greeting messages by e-cards, social media or texting.

まずはカード。好きな相手にカードを送るのはイギリスでは一つの伝統です。カップルならばお互いにカードを送りあいます。

またひそかに好きな人にも送ります。学校などでは、誰がカードをどの子に送ったのかが話題になります。

バレンタインのカードには詞がついています。一番有名な詞が「Roses are red, violets are blue, Honey is sweet and so are you.」（バラは赤い。菫は青い。砂糖は甘い。あなたのように）です。面白いの詞もあります。「Roses are red, violets are blue, you look like a monkey and you smell like one too!」（バラは赤い。菫は青い。そしてあなたはサルにていて、サルのにおいがする）

今日では、バレンタインデーのカードはネット化され、SNSなどを使ったメッセージに代わってきています。

Secondly presents and flowers are also an important part of Valentine’s day. Traditionally, men give chocolates or flowers to their wives or girlfriends. As many men find it tiring to buy presents, there are now websites offering advice on which Valentine’s presents to buy. The common Valentine’s presents tend to be the following, red roses, a box of chocolates, romantic songs, a phone, jewellery or perfume.

Also as Valentine’s Day is very a romantic day, many people use this opportunity to either propose or get married.

二番目は、プレゼントや花を送ります。イギリスでは、男性がチョコや花を奥さんやガールフレンドに渡します。男性はこれらのプレゼントを探すのに苦労していますが、今ではネットでプレゼントのアドバイスをくれます。バレンタインにあげるプレゼントで人気なのは、赤いバラ、チョコ、ラブソング、電話、アクセサリー、香水などです。

そしてバレンタインデーはロマンティックな日であるので、プロポーズや結婚をする人が多いです。
