The Long Weekend

Hello everyone,

Did you enjoy the long weekend? It was the Emperor’s birthday on Sunday, which made Monday a national holiday. It was the first holiday of Naruhito’s reign. The previous emperor’s birthday was in December which was close to the winter vacation. I like this new holiday because it’s further away from other holidays like winter and golden week. Many people had a quiet long weekend at home because of the corona virus scare. At the moment people are unsure whether to travel, and we are wondering when it will end. Every time I go outside, I see people wearing masks. I hope they are good enough protection to keep the virus from spreading around Japan. This isn’t the first time a new virus has spread around the world. There were SARS, bird flu, and swine flu before, but the corona virus has spread more than those. Some cities in China have shut down completely. I hope that it doesn’t put the summer Olympics in jeopardy. We will have to wait and see.

Next week it will officially be spring! March is on the way, and I’m looking forward to warmer weather. Last weekend was warm, it was 20 degrees on Sunday! I feel like we’ve had a very mild winter this year. This means that the cherry blossom will bloom earlier than usual. There is a great local cherry blossom festival in our local park every year. I hope they can set it up in time! What are you looking forward to this spring?

３連休は楽しめましたか。三連休の日曜日は今年から始まった新しい天皇誕生日でした。私はこの３連休はいいなと思いました。冬休みとゴールデンウィークの間にあってちょうどよいですね。でも今はコロナウィルスで外出を控えなければいけません。これはいつまで続くのか、皆不安に思っています。外に出ると、皆がマスクをしています。コロナウィルスのような新種のウィルスでSARSが以前に世界に流行しました。でもコロナほど威力はありませんでした。オリンピックに影響が出なければいいですが
