Hello everyone,

Kevin here. How are you doing? This week started with the Christmas party on Sunday. It went really great and I had a lovely time playing Christmas games, singing Christmas songs and meeting Santa with everyone. The students looked like they had lots of fun and made some really nice looking Christmas crafts. Thanks for coming and making it special. Afterwards, Sachiyo and Alan had kindly organised a farewell party for me. It was a lovely, moving event and all the Hario staff were there as well as friends of Hario and some of my own friends. I was presented with a cork board full of polaroids and goodbye messages from students, staff and everyone. It was a beautiful gift and it’ll remind me of my time here in future years. Sachiyo loves photographs and videos and I understand why. They help you capture important moments in time so you can remember them in the future.

みなさん、こんにちは。ケビンです。今週の日曜日は、クリスマス会がありました。クリスマスゲーム、クリスマスの歌を歌い、サンタに会い、とても楽しいパーティでした。参加してくれた生徒達も非常に楽しんでいました。クラフトもよくできていましたね。参加してくれた生徒の皆さん、ありがとう。楽しい時間をありがとう。そしてその後、サチヨとアランが企画をして私のお別れ会を開いてくれました。とても楽しい時間で、感動的でした。お別れ会には、HARIOスタッフはもちろん、私の友人もいました。生徒やスタッフのメッセージつき写真がいっぱいに貼られたコルクボードをもらいました。すばらしいプレゼントでした。そのプレゼントをみてHARIOにいた時間をこれからも思い出すでしょう。サチヨは写真やビデオをとるのが大好きですが、その理由が理解できます。それは大事な瞬間をとらえ形に残し、将来もその瞬間を忘れずにいられるからです。

It’s my last week at the school, so I’ve been saying goodbye to each class. I have a prize draw so everyone gets a goodbye gift. I’m sorry if the gifts are a little modest. There are 280 students at Hario and it’s a big logistical challenge to organise for so many. Anyway, my feeling for this place and the people here is more than you can say in words or a gift. Many students and parents have given me farewell letters, gifts and kind words. I’m so appreciative. I don’t cry easily, but I’ve been teary eyed a lot this week.

今週が私のとっての最後の週なので、生徒の皆さんにお別れを言っています。お別れの「プレゼントおみくじ」を用意しました。たいしたものではありませんが、はずれはありません。生徒２８０人分のおみくじの中に大当たりが４つあります。かなりの倍率です。私の皆さんへの感謝の気持ちは言葉でやプレゼントでは表しきれません。たくさんの生徒や保護者の皆さんにお別れのお手紙、プレゼントや言葉をいただきました。本当にありがとうございます。私はめったには泣かないのですが、今週はもう何度か泣いています。

I started working at Hario in 2011, in the week of the Great East Japan Earthquake that caused the tsunami and the nuclear crisis in Fukushima. We were lucky to be mostly unaffected here in Fuji, except for some blackouts. However, starting a new job is tough in any circumstance and it took my wife and I a while to settle here. The students are staff were always kind and helpful, but there’s so much to learn with the PLS System and the school and it was overwhelming at times. I wouldn’t have guessed at that time that I would stay 7 years. The reason I stayed so long is simple; Sachiyo. She was, and is, a wonderful boss, and would rightly become owner of the school a couple of years after I started. She helped me when I needed it and gave me the advice and feedback I needed, even when it was difficult to hear criticism. She listened to my ideas about the school and together we put together the English camp as well as lots of smaller changes. The school has grown, gained students and become, I think and I hope, a better place. I know I’ve become a better teacher from working here and learning in the job. I’ve worked with great, dedicated staff members over the seven years, including Galit, Paula, Tomoko, Misato, Rina, Eri, Rosie and Yuka. The core staff now of Taka, Yui and Alan have all been here for years. I’ve seen them learn on the job and grow and become the heart of Hario. I’m sure they’ll continue to do a great job at Hario for a long time to come. New teachers, including Nao, will start next year and I hope they have a great time in the Hario career.

私がHARIOで働き始めたのは２０１１年です。（*当時はパイオニアランゲッジスクールで2013年からHARIOイングリッシュスクールに変わりました）その２０１１年の働き初めの日の数日後に、東北地震がありました。津波や福島原子力発電所の災害がありました。私達は（富士市）、その後数週間にも及んだ停電以外は、幸運にも、大きな被害をうけずに済みました。そんな中で、私は新しい環境、富士市へ移り住み、この仕事がスタートしました。生徒達やスタッフは常に優しく、親切でしたが、私はPLSシステム、学校のことなど沢山の覚えることがあり、最初はアップアップでした。その時はまだ、７年もここにお世話になるとは想像もしていませんでした。私がここに、これほど長くいた理由は、サチヨ（播本先生）です。彼女は、すばらしい上司でした。私が働きはじめて数年で、彼女はHARIOを立ち上げ、経営者となりました。彼女は私が助けが必要なとき、常に助けてくれ、私がアドバイスが必要なときは、いつも適切にくれました。時には私に批評があっても報告をくれアドバイスをくれました。私のアイディアを聞き入れてくれ、採用してくれました。イングリッシュキャンプやその他の小さいこともです。HARIOが立ち上がって４年、学校は大きくなり、、生徒の数も毎年増え続け、HARIOは４年でより素晴らしい学校になりました。私もここで働き、教育や仕事について沢山を学び、成長することができました。この７年間で、一緒に頑張った講師やスタッフ達と出会い、別れもありました。ガリート、ポーラ、ともこ、みさと、りな、えり、ロザンナそしてゆか。現在のスタッフの、たか、ゆい、アラン。彼らがHARIOに来てから、もう４～５年一緒に働いています。彼らは仕事を学び、成長していき、今ではHARIOの中心スタッフになりました。きっとこれからも、彼らはHARIOで貢献してくれることでしょう。新しいスタッフのなおは来年から仲間入りします。HARIOで、すばらしい時間とともにキャリアーを磨いていくことでしょう。

I’m saying goodbye to 280 students this week, most of whom I’ve taught now, or in the past. Over the years there were hundreds more. Some students, 5 I think, I have taught continuiously for 7 years. I’ll miss you all. I watched the students grow up, improve their English so much and transform over time. It’s been amazing. A girl I was teaching the lower case alphabet 7 years ago is now trying for the TOEIC test after passing the Eiken 2nd grade and can speak English compentantly about almost anything. I’d love to take credit for that, but the improvement is mostly down to her hard work, combined her parents support and the teaching system we’ve set up at Hario. A boy at the first English camp four years ago lost his bag, his clothes and himself several times and couldn’t look after himself. This year he was a team leader, took care of a group, did a great job and was chosen in 2nd place in the MVP prize. The speech contest too has changed. It was always a good event and a great showcase for the school and the students. However, if you compare the student’s speeches 7 years ago to this year, you’ll see a huge improvement. Getting little kids to sing on the stage was always a difficult challenge. This year they sang their hearts out and did a great job. The first camp was a great event, but it was the first time and there were unexpected problems that we had to learn from. This year, there was so much more opportunities to use English and for the students to experience things, show leadership and initiative. You can learn from everything, success and failure, and it’s how you grow.

In 7 years I’ve learnt so much and had so many great experiences. Hario has changed me for the better. I hope I have, at least a little, changed Hario too. Thank you so much to Sachiyo, the staff, the students and their families. I’ll never forget you.

今週は、２８０人の生徒の皆にお別れをいっています。現在担当している生徒から、これまで私の生徒だった生徒まで。ある生徒達は、私が教えていたときは５才ぐらいでした。私は彼らを７年間ずっと持ちました。この７年間、生徒達が成長していき、英語が上達していく姿をみてきました。その変身していく過程は素晴らしいものです。７才の時、小文字を教えていたある女の子の生徒は、今では英検２級を合格し、TOEICの勉強をしています。英語も流暢に話すことができます。私が教えたからだけでなく、彼女の努力、保護者の方のサポート、HARIOのカリキュラムらが彼女の上達を後押ししたと思います。ある男の子は、小３の時に、第１回のHARIOイングリッシュキャンプに参加しました。彼は、キャンプ中に自分のバッグや洋服などが見つからないと大騒ぎし、我々も探すのを手伝いました。時が経ち、その子は今年の第４回目のキャンプに参加しました。彼はリーダーを務めました。グループの子たちの面倒をみて、リーダーとして素晴らしい仕事をしました。彼は、準MVPに選ばれました。スピーチコンテストもこの７年で変わりました。毎年行われる、HARIOの一大イベントです。７年前と比べると、大きな違いと向上、上達が感じます。PLS１０＆９、幼児クラスの発表タイムのパフォーマンスは毎年、大きなチャレンジでありました。今年は、彼らが歌を覚えステージで元気に堂々としたパフォーマンスを披露してくれました。初めてのキャンプはとてもよかったですが、初めてであったため、予期しない問題も起きました。そこから私達は学んでいきました。今年は、これまでよりはるかに英語を使う機会があり、たくさんを経験し、自主性やリーダーシップを養いました。我々はすべての事から学ぶことができます。それが成功でも失敗でも。その経験から学び成長していくのです。これまでの七年間で私はたくさんの事を学び、経験しました。HARIOが私を成長させてくれました。私もHARIOをよい方向に変えていく力に少しでもなれたかなと思います。

最後に、これまで本当にありがとうサチヨ、スタッフの皆、生徒の皆さん、ご家族の皆さん。私は皆さんを決して忘れません。
