Hello everyone,

It’s the spookiest month of the year, October. So if you dare come to Hario this month, prepare for frightening things inside. We have decorated our school with lots of scary Halloween symbols. There are jack o’lanterns, spiders, ghosts, zombies, bats, witches, black cats, and many more spooky characters. Where did all of these symbols of halloween come from? And why are they everywhere in October? Halloween began in my home country, Ireland over 1,000 years ago. The ancient people of Ireland, called Celts, celebrated the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death. Celts believed that on the night before the new harvest year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On the night of October 31 they celebrated Samhain, when it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth. Over time, celebration changed to “All Hallows Eve”, and then to the Halloween we know now. At the end of the harvest in October, pumpkins were popular, and people carved faces into them to ward off evil spirits. That’s where jack o’lanterns come from. The belief that spirits returned is somewhat similar to the Japanese “Obon” holiday. In Ireland people wore costumes to commemorate the ghosts returning. Over time the costumed people began going from house to house to ask for treats for their halloween party. This evolved into “Trick or Treat”. So that’s why people dress up and get candy every year. Halloween has spread all around the world now. I think it’s because people like to dress up every now and then. We will have a Halloween party week at the end of the month, so get your costume ready! みなさん、こんにちは。

年で一番おそろしい月、１０月がきました。ハリオに来ると、こわーいものが飾られています。ハリオはハロウィン仕様になったからです。ジャックオーランターン、スパイダー、おばけ、ゾンビ、こうもり、おばけ、黒猫、などなど。このようなハロウィンの象徴はどこからきたのでしょう。なぜ１０月なんでしょう。実はハロウィンの起源は、私の国、アイルランドにあります。１０００年以上も前です。アイルランド人は、夏の終わりや収穫、冬の到来などを祝いました。アイルランドでは、収穫が始まる前の晩に、現実の世界と死者の世界が融合すると信じていました。１０月３１日の夜にサムハイン（サウィン祭）を祝います。この日は死者の魂が現実の世界に帰ってくると信じされていました。それから時がたち、”オールハロウイヴ”という祭りの名前になり、今のハロウィンの名前になりました。１０月の終わりはパンプキンがよく採れることから、人々は悪霊をはらうためにパンプキンに顔を彫ります。これがジャックオーランタンの始まりです。霊が生きている世界に戻ってくるというのは、日本の「お盆」に似ていますね。昔のアイルランドの人々は、戻ってきた霊を迎え入れるために、コスチュームをまといました。その風習が時が経ち、家々をお化けのかっこをして周り、お菓子をねだる「トリックオアトリート」の形になりました。今では、ハロウィンは世界中に広まった風習となりました。きっと昔も今も、人はドレスアップするのが好きなんですね。今月の最後の一週間（１０月２８日～１１月１日まで）は、HARIOはハロウィンウィークとなります。皆さん、コスチュームの準備をしてくださいね。それでは。
