Hello everyone,

I hope you got chocolate on Valentine’s Day, whether it was “obligation” chocolate for the boys or “tomo-choco” (friend’s chocolate) for the girls. Many of our student’s spent time baking home-made sweets for Valentine’s Day last week. I think it’s a great way to learn baking skills.

I got a doughnut shaped humidifier for my classroom. In winter we have to humidify the room because the ait is too dry. Conversely, we have dehumidify in summer because the air is too moist. This was all new to me when I first came here. In Ireland the air is always about average humidity and doesn’t change much. I never had to use a humidifier or dehumidifier before. The seasons here are more severe so you really notice the humidity. I’m really looking forward to spring. My favorite things about spring are, of course, the warmer weather, cherry blossoms, longer days, and the beginning of festivals. I went to my first festival of the year last Sunday in Yoshiwara. They are always a fun way to spend your day, with great food and entertainment. The cherry blossoms are forecast to bloom here in late March, a little earlier than usual. My local park has a great sakura festival every year under the trees.

So I’m looking forward to spring, but it’s still winter now. In the final weeks of the season I’ll still enjoy some things about winter. For example, getting under the “kotatsu” on a cold day. There is no English word for “kotatsu”, it’s a blanket under the table, usually with a heated blanket on the floor. It’s so cosy to sit in there, but be careful, it’s easy to fall asleep! Another thing I’ll miss about winter is the food. We have specific winter food here, such as “nabe”. These are hotpots of warming food, such as pork, tofu, lettuce, sausages, and more. Far too hot for summer. So farewell winter and roll on spring.

みなさんこんにちは、アランです。

バレンタインにチョコをもらえましたか。それがたとえ男の子への「義理」チョコであろうと女の子への「友チョコ」でも。

多くの生徒が先週あバレンタインのために手作りのお菓子を作って過ごしました。お菓子作りを学ぶ良い機会だと思います。

 

私は部屋にドーナッツ型の加湿器を置いています。冬には空気が乾燥するので部屋を加湿しなければなりません。

逆に夏には湿気がすごいので除湿器が必要です。日本に来たときはこれが新鮮でした。アイルランドでは空気はいつも大体平均の湿度で、あまり変わりません。これまで加湿器も除湿器も使ったことがありませんでした。ここはより厳しい気候なので、とても湿気を感じます。

私は春が本当に待ち遠しいです。春の好きなところは、もちろん暖かい気候と、さくら、日の長さ、そしてお祭りの始まりです。

先週の日曜日に吉原で今年はじめてのお祭りに行きました。

おいしい食べ物とお楽しみがあればいつもその日を楽しむことができます。さくらはこの辺りでは3月の終わりに咲くと予想されています。いつもより少し早いです！私の近所の公園は毎年桜の木の下ですばらしい桜まつりをします。

だから春が楽しみなのですが、今はまだ冬です。冬の終わりの数週間、冬に関することをまだ楽しむつもりです。

例えば寒い日に「こたつ」に入るとか。

「こたつ」にあてはまるような言葉は英語にはありません。こたつとはテーブルの下の毛布、たいてい床の上で暖められた毛布。

こたつに座っているととても気持ち良いです。ですが気を付けてください、うっかり寝てしまいます！

もう一つ、冬で名残惜しいのは食べ物です。日本には冬によく食べるものがあります。例えば「鍋」です。豚肉や豆腐、レタス、ソーセージ、などの食べ物を温める鍋というものがあります。夏よりずっと熱いです。

冬にはさようなら、春よ早く来い。
