Hello everyone,

I hope you enjoyed the long weekend with Constitution Day yesterday. We got our daughter her first bicycle and she learned to ride it without training wheels. We had the option of installing training wheels, but she wants to learn to balance by herself. She can manage to make some distance on it without falling, so she is learning fast.

This Thursday is a special day all over the world. That’s right, it’s Valentine’s Day! Where does this celebration come from? Saint Valentine was a priest from Rome, Italy. He was a martyr, who was killed for spreading Christianity on February 14th in the year 269. According to legend, during his imprisonment Saint Valentine restored sight to the blind daughter of his judge, and before his execution he wrote her a letter signed “Your Valentine” as a farewell. Many years later, the Catholic Church honoured him with the Saint’s Day to commemorate him. It wasn’t until the 14th Century when the day become associated with romance. In 18th century England, it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering chocolates and sending cards. These days, it is celebrated differently around the world. In Ireland, people give presents or cards to their loved ones. It is usually the man who gives these, although women can too. This is in contrast to Japan, where Valentine’s is a day when women and girls give chocolates (often homemade) to as many boys and men as they can. There is no romantic link, it is given more out of obligation. The boys and men must remember who gave them chocolate, however. This is because one month later, on March 14th it’s White Day. On this day they must repay the favour and give the girls and women chocolates. This day only exists in Japan, and was created by confectionary companies. I don’t think it will catch on in Ireland because we have Easter around the same time. During Easter, everyone is already stuffing themselves with chocolate eggs, so they can’t eat any more!

みなさんこんにちは、アランです。

みなさん3連休を楽しめましたか。娘は初めて自転車に乗り、なんとか補助輪なしで乗ることができました。

補助輪をつけてもいいよと言ったのですが、娘は自分でバランスをとれるようになりたいと言いました。

なんとか少しの距離を転ばずに走ることができました。学習するのがとても早いです。

今週の木曜日は世界中で特別な日です。その通り、バレンタインデーです！

このお祝いの由来は何でしょう？

聖バレンタインはイタリアのローマの聖職者でした。彼は殉教者で、269年の2月14日にキリスト教を広めるために殺されてしまいました。

伝説によると、彼は投獄中,看守の娘の目をみえるようにし、処刑の前にその娘に「あなたのバレンタインより」と署名した手紙をお別れとして送りました。ずいぶん経ってからカトリック教会は記念に聖なる日をつくることで、彼を称えました。

14世紀まではロマンスには関係のない日でした。18世紀のイギリスで、恋人たちが花や、チョコレート、カードなどを送って互いの愛情を示す機会になりました。

今日では世界中で異なる祝い方をします。アイルランドではプレゼントかカードを好きな人に贈ります。

たいていは男性から贈りますが、女性からも贈ることはできます。日本では逆で、バレンタインは女性や少女が（たいてい手作りの）チョコレートをできるだけたくさんの男の子や男性に贈ります。恋愛感情というより、礼儀として渡されます。

少年や男性たちは誰からもらったか覚えておかなければなりません。なぜなら1か月後、3月14日はホワイトデーです。この日に彼らはお礼としてチョコレートをあげなければならないからです。このような日は日本にしか存在せず、製菓会社によってつくられました。

アイルランドではこの時期イースターがあるのであまり広まらないかと思います。

イースターの間はみんなたくさんのチョコの入った卵をもらうのでこれ以上食べられません！
