Bean Throwing Day 節分

Hello everyone,

It’s February and already it’s feeling warmer here in Fuji. Yesterday was the warmest day of the year so far, and I hope it stays it that way until spring. The Hario Spring Campaign began yesterday. Now anyone can try four trial lessons for free. You can come and see what Hario is all about. I have already met a few of our newest students and really enjoyed welcoming them.

On Sunday my daughter came in with a big bag of soy beans. I asked what she was going to do with them and she threw some on the floor. That was when I realised it was bean throwing day. We went to the garden and threw beans to ward off evil spirits. We do this while saying “Demons out! Luck in!” This tradition can take place on 3rd or 4th of February. It marks the end of winter and beginning of spring. In some places people dress up as demons or “Oni” and scare children to tears while they throw beans to keep them away. A few years ago I played the part of an Oni, and unfortunately the children weren’t scared and instead they laughed at me! I’m not very effective at being a frightening character. I can’t even scare our students at Halloween.

Next Monday is foundation day. This national holiday began as a day to reflect on the establishment of the nation of Japan. From 1872 to 1948, February 11 was holiday commemorating the day on which, according to legend, Emperor Jimmu is said to have become the first emperor in 660 B.C. I hope you all enjoy the holiday. After that we have Valentines Day on February 14th. So remember to make chocolates for all the boys!

みなさんこんにちは、アランです。

もう2月になり、富士はすでに暖かくなってきています。昨日はいまのところ今年で一番暖かかったです。春まで続けばいいなと思います。HARIOの春のキャンペーンが昨日始まりました。誰でも4回無料体験ができます。HARIOがどんなところか見ていただくことができます。すでに数名新しい生徒さんにお会いし、とてもうれしかったです。

日曜日に娘が大きな豆の入った袋をもってやってきました。娘にそれで何をするのかとたずねると、豆を床に投げました。

ここで私は、今日が節分であることに気づきました。娘と「鬼は外、福は内！」といって豆を外にまきました。

この日は、大人が鬼のかっこうをして、子供たちを怖がらせ、その鬼にむかって豆をまくという風習があります。

私も数年前、この鬼の役をやりました。でも生徒達はこわがりもせず、逆に笑っていました。私には怖い役は向いていないようです。

来週の月曜日は建国記念日です。皆さん、３連休を楽しんでくださいね。その数日後はバレンタインデーです。

女性の皆さん、チョコレートを作るのを忘れないでくださいね。
