Hello everyone,

I hope you’re keeping well and avoiding the cold and flu viruses that are going around. It’s mask time! Almost all of our students are wearing masks to protect from diseases. I think it’s a good way to keep safe, considering how easily viruses can spread around schools. In Ireland nobody ever wears masks. Cold and flu is common at this time of year there too. If you wore a mask you would get some funny looks outside and people would wonder what you are hiding from. Maybe they’ll catch on and become more popular in the future when Irish people think that masks can help.

Members of my family have already caught either cold or flu recently, but they are all better now and luckily I didn’t catch anything, touch wood. What does “touch wood” mean? It’s a superstition that originated long ago in Europe. If we say that we haven’t been the victim of an unfortunate event yet, such as catching the flu, we usually touch wood to avoid this event happening to us. In Ireland my parents use this phrase quite often. For example you would say, “I haven’t caught a cold yet this winter”. Upon realising you might be tempting fate by mentioning the cold, you find the nearest wooden object, touch it and say “touch wood”. You are now safe from catching a cold. This superstition comes from the old belief that fairies lived in trees, and people would knock on the trees for good luck and to keep bad spirits away. There are many more superstitions where I come from. The older generations seem to follow them more often, and I think younger generations take less notice of them. They might die out over the years. Can you think of any other superstitions? Do you believe or follow any of them?

マスクの時期ですね！ほとんど全員の生徒が風邪予防にマスクをしています。

学校でウイルスが感染しやすいことを思えば、予防として最適な方法だと私は思います。

アイルランドではまったく誰もマスクをつけません。風邪やインフルエンザはあちらでも毎年よくあることです。

もしあなたがマスクをつけたら外で浮いてしまい、一体何を隠しているんだろうと人々に思われることでしょう。

きっとそのうちアイルランド人も追いついて、将来マスクが役に立つとわかればマスクは有名になるでしょう。

私の家族も、最近風邪又はインフルエンザにかかってしまいました。ですが今は皆すっかり良くなり、私はなんにもかかっていません。touch wood。

「touch wood」とはどういう意味でしょう？ヨーロッパの古い迷信です。まだなにか不幸なことに見舞われていないということを言う時に、(たとえばインフルエンザにかかるとか)、よく自分たちにそれが起こらないように気に触りました。

アイルランドでは私の両親はこの言い回しをとてもよく使います。

たとえば、もしあなたが「この冬まだ風邪をひいていません。」といったとします。

風邪と言ってしまったことでその運命に傾き始めていると気が付くと、一番近くの木製のものを見つけ、「touch wood」と言います。

これで風邪をひかずに済みますこの迷信は気に精霊が宿るという古い信仰に由来し、人々は幸運や邪悪なものから身を守るために気を叩きます。

アイルランドにはもっとたくさんの迷信があります。

お年寄りの世代はもっとそれらを信じているようですが、私が思うに若者はあまり気にしないようです。

だんだん迷信は薄れてきているのかもしれません。
