Recently, we got new materials for use in some classes 📖

One question that has come up is “What’s your favorite English word?” ❓❔

Apparently, a popular English word is “nice” 😎

Learning that has made me wonder if it’s the word describing a personality trait, or if it’s the exclamation that’s popular 🤔

 

We can use the word nice in both of these ways, as in the following examples:

 

“My teacher at Hario is nice.”

In this case, “nice” means friendly, understanding, or kind.

 

(A Hario student says to me:) “Hey Gerald, I passed my Eiken test!”

(Me:) “Nice!”

In this case, “nice” means ‘nicely done!’ or ‘good job’.

 

What’s your favorite English word, and why?

 

みなさんこんにちは、ジェラルドです。

最近いくつかのクラスで新しい教材を使っています。

そのうちの一つの質問に「あなたのお気に入りの英語の言葉は何ですか？」というものがあります。

あきらかに、人気の英語は「nice」です。

このことを知って私は、その言葉が人柄を表すのか、感嘆を表すのかどちらだろうかと思いました。

わたしたちは「nice」を次のような両方の意味で使います。

 

“My teacher at Hario is nice.” HARIOのわたしの先生は親切だ

この場合”nice”は親しげ、理解がある、あるいは優しいという意味になります。

 

（HARIOの生徒）： “Hey Gerald, I passed my Eiken test!”

こんにちはジェラルド先生、英検に合格しました！

（私）:”Nice!”

 

この場合”nice”は「よくやった！」あるいは「でかした！」という意味です。
