A Trip to Tokyo 東京旅行

Hello everyone,

Did you check out the Yoshiwara Gion Festival last weekend? I went on Saturday, which was lucky because it rained all Sunday. It was hot and humid, which is typical for the rainy season. The first thing you notice as you approach the festival is the noise. From several streets away you can hear taiko drums, traditional flutes, bells, and the chants of people pulling floats called “dashi” around the streets. It’s a noisy festival because there are 21 dashi floats being pulled along the streets. Each float represents a neighbourhood in Yoshiwara, and they are filled with people playing instruments. The groups of people pulling the floats are also shouting, which adds to the noise. It creates a lively atmosphere on the streets. There are many street vendors too, and we cooled down with some shaved ice or “kakigori”. It’s one of the highlights of the summer festivals here. I was glad to see many of our students there.

Monday was my daughter’s fourth birthday, so we celebrated on Sunday with a trip to Tokyo. My wife’s family and cousin joined us too. We set off at 6:30AM (which is an early start for me!). First we went to Ueno Zoo. My daughter is a big fan of animals so we had a great time looking at them. It wasn’t raining much, there so most of the animals stayed outside. We wanted to see the pandas, but there was an hour long wait for them so we didn’t bother. We saw them before a few years ago, and didn’t want to stand in the rain for an hour. The rest of the zoo wasn’t busy so we had good views of all of the other animals. After the zoo we went to Tokyo Skytree. We didn’t go up but spent some time shopping, and walking around Asakusa. By the end of the trip we were all quite tired and I fell asleep during the car journey home. Don’t worry, my wife’s cousin was driving. We had a great trip, and I wish my daughter another happy year.

Now it’s time to enjoy the Soccer World Cup, beginning this Friday!

みなさんこんにちは。

先週、吉原祇園祭には行きましたか私は土曜日に行ったのでラッキーでした日曜日は一日中雨が降りましたから。

その日は梅雨の典型的な蒸し暑い日でした。

祇園祭に行ってまず気が付くことはその音です。

離れた通りからでも太鼓の音、伝統的な縦笛、鐘、そして通りを「山車」と呼ばれるものを弾く人々の詠唱が聞こえます。

21もの山車が通りを引かれるので賑やかなお祭りです。

それぞれの山車は吉原の近隣を代表しており、楽器を演奏する人々で溢れています。山車を引く人々もまた、叫び、その音に加わります。

その音は通りを活気ある雰囲気にします。

たくさんの屋台もあります。私達はかき氷を食べて涼みました日本ではかき氷は夏祭りの目玉の一つです。たくさんＨＡＲＩＯの生徒たちに会えて嬉しかったです。

月曜日は娘の4歳の誕生日でしたわたしたちは日曜日に東京へ旅行に行き、お祝いをしました。

私の妻の家族やいとこも行きました。朝6時30分に出発しました。(私にしては早い出発です！)

始めに上野動物園へ行きました。娘は動物が大好きなので動物を見てとても楽しんでました。

あまり雨が降っていなかったのでほとんどの動物が外で起きていました。

パンダが見たかったのですが、1時間も待たなければならなかったので、見るのをあきらめました。

数年前にパンダは見ましたし、雨の中一時間も待ちたくありませんでした。

他のところは混んでいなかったのでその他の全ての動物をよく見る事ができました。

動物園の後、東京スカイツリーへ行きました上には登りませんでしたが、買い物をしたり、浅草を散歩して過ごしました。旅の終わりにはみんなかなり疲れて家に帰る途中来るまで寝てしまいました。心配しないでください。私の妻のいとこが運転してくれていました。すばらしい旅行でした。そして娘にとってまた幸せな一年になるよう願っています。
