Hello everyone.

As some of you have heard, I am driving up to Tokamachi, Niigata to play some basketball this weekend. I am going to a tournament where anyone can play. This will be my sixth time.

At the tournament, teams from Niigata, Fukushima, Toyama, Gunma, Ishikawa, and Nagano and more gather to have some fun. Teams are made up of whoever—men, women, boys, and girls from all different countries. Though many of the players do not speak Japanese very well, it is always very easy to communicate through sports, which are played the same in every country. Basketball is especially fun, as it is popular all around the world, and everyone can contribute to their team, and bond with their teammates.

After a day of competition, we get together at a hot spring and wash the sweat away. This gives us a chance to make even more friends from the other teams. On Sunday, everyone switches teams, and for some unknown reason, many people wear costumes.

It’s a lot of fun. I can’t wait to exercise for hours and hours this weekend, and enjoy the delicious rice and local food of Niigata!

みなさんこんにちは。

聞いたことがある人も居るかもしれませんが、私は今週末バスケットボールの試合をしに新潟の十日町へ車で行ってきます。誰でも参加できるトーナメント試合です。参加するのはこれで6回目です。トーナメントでは新潟、福島、富山、群馬、石川、長野などなどたくさんの所からのチームが集まります。全然出身の違う男、女、少年、少女誰でもチームに入れます。選手の多くは日本語をあまり話せませんが、スポーツをすればコミュニケーションを取るのはとても簡単です。バスケットボールは特に楽しいです。世界中で人気があり、誰もが気軽に参加できて、チームメイトとの絆を深める事ができるからです。

 

一日目の試合のあとは、みんなで温泉へ行き、汗を流します。そうしていっそうチームの人とも友達になることができます。日曜日には全員チームを変え、そして理由は良くわかりませんが、皆がコスチュームを見に付けて試合をします。

 

とても楽しいです。今週末に何時間も運動をし、おいしいご飯と新潟の地元食材を食べるのが楽しみです。
