Hello everyone,

We celebrated not one, but two Hario birthdays last week. Last Wednesday was Sachiyo’s birthday and on Saturday I turned 37. We celebrated on Wednesday with a special lunch with all of our Hario staff members. This lunch was also to welcome our newest staff members Nao, Ryan and Matt. It was great fun and delicious! It was a traditional Japanese restaurant where the guests sit on the floor. My family also took me out for a birthday dinner on Saturday to a similar restaurant. This stlye of seating doesn’t exist in Ireland, so it takes some getting used to. I can’t sit on my knees, so I find the “mermaid” style, with both legs out to one side, is most comfortable for me. Thanks to everyone for the birthday cards and presents. I got many green things to remind me of Ireland. You can hear the “Happy Birthday” song a lot here at Hario. We sing it almost every day to celebrate our student’s birthdays. This song holds the world record for the most recognized song in the English language. The song’s lyrics have been translated into at least 18 languages. It was originally published as far back as 1893, but the song was called “Good Morning to all”. It was written in Kentucky, U.S.A., and people aren’t sure when the lyrics changed to Happy Birthday. The tune is so memorable that it spread all over the world. There have been several attempts by companies to copyright the song, but cases are usually dismissed as the song is now recognised to be in the public domain and shouldn’t belong to anyone. Some greedy companies wanted royalties to be paid for every performace of the song! It’s for celebrating birthdays with family and friends, not making money for businesses. Whatever language you sing it in, have a great birthday this year.

Don’t forget about Hario Camp next month! Only a few weeks to go before we head out to Asagiri Highland for fun and adventure. It’s going to be an amazing trip and our students will have a great time. See you there!

みなさんこんにちは。

私達は先週一人だけではなく、二人もハリオのお誕生日をお祝いしました。先週の水曜日はさちよさんの誕生日で、土曜日には私が37歳になりました。私達は水曜日にハリオのスタッフ全員で特別なランチを食べてお祝いをしました。このランチは新しいスタッフメンバーである奈緒、ライアン、マットの歓迎会でもありました。とても楽しく、すごく美味しかったです！座敷に座る日本食屋さんにいきました。土曜日には私の家族も似たようなお店へ連れて行ってくれました。このようなスタイルの席はアイルランドにはありません。なので慣れるのに少し時間がいります。私は正座ができないので両足を片方に出す「マーメイド(人魚)」スタイルが自分には一番合っているとわかりました。みなさん誕生日プレゼントやバースデーカードをありがとうございます。アイルランドを思い起こさせるたくさんの緑色の物をもらいました。

ハリオではたくさん「ハッピーバースデー」の歌を聞きますね。ほとんど毎日ハリオの生徒さんたちを祝うために歌っています。

この歌は最もよく知られた英語の歌として世界記録を持っています。その歌詞は少なくとも18カ国語に翻訳されています。もともとは遠い1893年に出版されましたが、その歌は「グッド・モーニング・トゥ・オール」と呼ばれていました。アメリカのケンタッキーで書かれ、いつハッピーバスデーに歌詞が変わったのかはよくわかりません。その曲はとても覚えやすかったので、世界中に広まりました。この歌を複写しようと多くの企業が試みましたが、iその歌は公共の所有物であり誰にも属すものではないと考えられ、どの主張も却下されました。いくつかの欲深い会社はその歌を披露する度に使用料を求めたのです！この歌は家族や友人の誕生日を祝うためのもので、お金を稼ぐためのものではありません。どんな言語で歌ったとしても、今年素晴らしい誕生日をすごしてください。
