Hello everyone,

It’s getting very cold and feels like winter is in full swing already. We got the kotatsu out on Sunday and it’s nice to get in and warm up on these cold days. I’ve never seen a kotatsu outside of Japan. Even though Ireland is even colder in winter, you won’t see anyone climb in under a kotatsu at their coffee table at home. How come? The main reason is central heating. You’ll find that an Irish house is quite warm all over during winter, with heaters on the wall of every room. So while it’s freezing cold outside, it’s well heated and insulated on the inside. In colder areas of Japan, houses have central heating, but there isn’t much need for it here in Shizuoka. We have fairly mild winters in Fuji, thanks to being on the south coast of Japan.

 

This month we welcome our newest staff members Mike and Hiromi to Hario. Welcome aboard! I’m really looking forward to working with you both. The students are going to have a great time getting to know you.

It’s only two days until the Hario Speech Contest 2017! The time has flown by and it’s almost here already. We’re busy making the last minute preparations to put on the best show we can for you. The students have all worked so hard for the big day. This is the biggest event of the year for us and we start preparing for it as far back as April. The students wrote their speeches around the time of Golden Week in April or May. Then we translated them and the students got to work. It’s a lot more than just learning the words. You’ll see their personality and showmanship in the performances. Otherwise quiet students will come out with a big voice that we’ve never heard from them before. That’s the power of a well performed speech. Good luck to everyone, and see you at LaHall on Thursday!

みなさん、こんにちは。寒さが増してきましたね。もう冬真っただ中という感じです。私の家では日曜日にコタツを出しました。寒さをしのぐにはとてもいいです。日本以外のところで、私はこたつをみたことがありません。アイルランドの方が、日本よりも寒いですが、こたつに似たものはありません。理由は、集中暖房システムにあると思います。アイルランドの家の室内は、家じゅうのヒーターが家全体をあたため、とても暖かいです。外が凍るように寒くても、家の中は暖房されています。日本の寒い地域では、そのような集中暖房システムだと思いますが、静岡はそこまで寒くありません。太平洋の影響で、富士市の冬はマイルドな寒さです。

今月は、新しいスタッフがHARIOに加わりました。マイクとヒロミです。二人と仕事をできるのを楽しみにしています。皆さんも新しいスタッフに声をかけてくださいね。それと２０１７スピーチコンテストまであと２日となりました。我々スタッフは最後の仕上げに忙しくしています。出場者の生徒達は、練習を頑張っています。このスピーチコンテストでは、HARIOの中で一番大きな、時間をかけているイベントであり、なんと準備は４月から始まっています。出場者の皆さん、これまでの努力の成果を生かして、頑張って。木曜日に会場で会いましょう。
