Hello everyone,

 

  How are you this week? Next week Hario will be off for the Silver Week holidays. I hope you have a little free time to spend with friends or family and do something fun. Our autumn campaign is continuing and we are seeing many trial students. I’ve been enjoying meeting new people and communicating in English. I hope they sign up and become part of the Hario community. The deadline for application for the next round of Eiken tests just passed and we have confirmed the students who will enter this November. You’ve only got a couple of months so focus and try your best. If you failed the last time, look at your weak points and work on them. We’ll be helping the students prepare as much as we can to give them the best chance of success. Good luck, everyone! The speech homework is well underway and I’m seeing lots of students able to say their whole speech already. We will judge who can go through to the speech contest in early October so you’ve only got a few more weeks before we decide. It will be competitive so keep practicing!

 

 Last week I went to the cinema to see the movie Dunkirk, which has just come out in Japan. It’s a war movie by British director Christopher Nolan and it’s been a big hit around the world and very well reviewed. Christopher Nolan is the director of the Dark KnightBatman movies and Inception. This time he’s directed a true story about the evacuation of British and other Allied troops from the beaches of Dunkirk during the Second World War. It was early into the war and at a point where the Nazis were winning. All of the British Army had retreated to one beach in Dunkirk in France. They looked doomed because the enemy was coming from all sides. The British Navy couldn’t evacuate them back to England quickly as their boats were too big to get them to the shallow beach front. The British navy changed their plan and got civillians and regular boats, like fishing boats and pleasure boats, to go to the beach under fire from air, sea and land to rescue the soldiers. They originally thought they might rescue 30,000 troops. Thanks to the civilian help, over 300,000 troops, most of the people stuck on the beach, were rescued. Later on in the war, those same troops would go back to France and liberate Europe from the Nazis. This story is famous in the UK and a proud part of our history. Until now, it hasn’t been so well known around the world and there’s never been a major movie about it. The movie was great and told this amazing story in a gripping and powerful way. It has something of a personal interest to me, being from the UK, and because my British grandparents served in the Second World War, as a nurse and a pilot, got married during the war and my father was born just as it finished. I liked the movie because it was told from the point of view of the ordinary soldiers, not the generals and the politicians who made the decisions. Most of the people involved in that war, and all wars, are low level and don’t have any influence on the life and death decisions made by the leaders. Anyway, I really recommend this movie to you all. Have you seen any good films recently?

来週はシルバーウィークでHARIOは一週間お休みとなります。

皆さんもお友達やご家族とお休みを楽しんでくださいね。

HARIOの秋のキャンペーンも２週目に入り、たくさんの体験授業受講の皆さんにお会いしています。皆さんがHARIOの仲間入りをしていただけたら嬉しいです。

キャンペーンは１０月５日までとなっています。

そして１０月７日は英検です。あと数週間ベストを尽くして。前回、惜しくも合格できなかった人は、弱点を見つけ、そこを集中的に見直しましょう。

スピーチホームワークは、後半にさしかかりました。もうすべてのスピーチを言える生徒がたくさんいます。１０月の中旬にはスピーチコンテスト出場者が選抜されます。休みが明けるとあと数週間しかありません。最後まで頑張って。

 

私は先週、「ダンケルク」という先日公開されたばかりの映画をみにいきました。この映画は、クリストファー・ノーランというイギリス人が監督を務める映画で、世界中で大ヒットしています。彼は、ダークナイトライジング、バットマン、インセプションなどのヒット作の監督でもあります。このものがたりは、第二次世界大戦のころ、イギリス軍からなる連合軍がダンケルク海岸から撤退する本当にあったストーリです。

大戦の初めのころ、ドイツのナチス軍が優勢であり、イギリス軍はダンケルク海岸から撤退を試みます。しかし海岸が浅いため、軍の船は海岸に近づけず、兵士たちを助け出すことができません。そこでイギリス軍は、民間人の力をかり、民間の船、漁船で海岸に近づき、軍を助け出そうとします。当初は３万人ぐらいの兵士は助け出せるだろうと思っていたイギリス軍でしたが、民間人の協力により３０万人の兵士がダンケルク海岸からイギリスへ救出されました。そして戦争の後半、兵士たちはダンケルクに再度渡り、ナチス軍に勝利しました。映画のストーリーがとても心をひきつけられ、パワフルで素晴らしい映画です。また個人的にも、私の祖父はこの大戦のパイロットで、祖母は看護師でした。大戦の間に彼らは結婚をし、その後、私の父が生まれました。またストーリーがある兵士の視点から描かれている点も好きな点です。とにかく、すばらしい映画なので非常にお勧めです。
